Political career

Chiranjeevi founded the Praja Rajyam Party, a national party in Andhra Pradesh's state. He said at the launch that social justice was the party's highest priority. The party secured 18 of the 294 seats in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2009 general elections. He ran for office in Tirupati and Palakollu constituencies, but lost in Palakollu, in the West Godavari district.

After two weeks of talks with Sonia Gandhi, the president of the country's parliament, who feared a no-confidence motion in the state assembly following the emergence of Y. S. Jagan Reddy's YSR Congress Party and the stronghold of Telangana agitation, Chiranjeevi joined the 30-month-old Praja Rajyam Party's stronghold. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha on March 29, 2012, after more than a year of combining his party into Congress. On April 3, 2012, he was elected and took the oath as a Rajya Sabha member. He was sworn in as the Union Minister of State on October 28th, 2012 (Independence charge), Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

Most members of the Andhra Pradesh wing of Congress left in protest after the state of Andhra Pradesh separated with heavy debt and little funding in June 2014. Chiranjeevi, on the other hand, stayed with Congress and led a drive for it as chairman of the Election Campaign Committee for 2014 parliamentary and assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh's residuary state, although he refused to run in elections. He did not campaign a slew of supporters due to the one-sided decision to divide Andhra Pradesh. Pawan Kalyan, the former Praja Rajyam Party youth wing leader, formed Jana Sena Party, a young politician who campaigned ardently against Congress and in favour of the Telugu Desam Party and Bharatiya Janata Party. The campaign's supporters were defeated in all parliamentary and state assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, with 165 out of 175 candidates losing deposits [obtaining less than 10% of vote share] due to strong anti-Congress sentiment prevailing.

Since the 2014 elections, he has remained away from active politics, and since then he hasn't attended any meetings of the Indian National Congress. His term as a Rajya Sabha member came to an end in April 2018.Though he is no longer active in politics, he was issued with a new All India Congress Committee identity card in 2022, fueling rumors of his political return.
