Guy started playing with Muddy Waters as a house guitarist on Chess Records in the 1960s and began a musical collaboration with harmonica player Junior Wells. In Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," Guy was ranked 23rd.

In the Rolling Stone list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time," his album "Stone Crazy" debuted at number 78th.

Clapton once referred to him as "the greatest guitar player alive."

Guy wrote the book Damn Right I've Got the Blues, with Donald Wilcock in 1999.

When I Left Home: My Story, his autobiography, was released in 2012.

Early life

Guy was born and raised in Lettsworth, Louisiana. His parents were sharecroppers, and Guy would buy cotton for $2.50 per 100 pounds as a kid. He began playing the guitar with a two-string diddley bow he made. He was given a Harmony acoustic guitar, which was donated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame decades later in Guy's lengthy career.

Buddy Guy Career

Career

Guy began playing with bands in Baton Rouge in the mid-1950s, including with Big Papa Tilley and Raful Neal. He served as a custodian at Louisiana State University while living there. In 1957, he recorded two demos for a local DJ in Baton Rouge for Ace Records, but they weren't released at the time.

Guy fell under Muddy Waters' influence shortly after moving to Chicago on September 25, 1957. Guy Guy got a contract with West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush in 1958. He appeared on Cobra Records as soon as 1994. During his Cobra sessions, he collaborated with Ike Turner, who helped him make his second album, "You Sure Can't Do"/ "This Is The End," by backing him on guitar and composing the latter. Artistical, Guy, a cobra's affiliate, has signed with Chess Records after two launches.

Guy's early career was hindered by his record company, Chess Records, from 1959 to 1968, which refused to film Guy playing in the novel style of his live shows. Guy's playing as "just making noise," according to Leonard Chess, the founder of Chess Records. Chess attempted to record Guy as a solo artist in the early 1960s, jazz keyboards, soul, and novelty dance tunes, but no one of these recordings was released as a single. I Left My Blues, Guy's only Chess album, was released in 1967 in San Francisco. The bulk of the songs were influenced by the era's soul boom, with orchestrations by Gene Barge and Charlie Stepney. To support Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Koko Taylor, and others, Chess used Guy mainly as a session guitarist. Guy began working as a tow truck driver when playing clubs at night as late as 1967.

Guy used to film sessions for Delmark Records under the guise of Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966. He appeared at the American Folk Blues Festival in 1965.

He appeared onstage at the 1969 "Supershow" in Staines, England, which also included Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Stephen Stills, Buddy Miles, Glenn Campbell, Jon Hiseman, and the Misunderstood. He founded The Checkerboard Lounge in 1972 with partner L.C. Thurman.

Guy's career was revived during the late 1980s and early 1990s' blues revival. Guy's revival was sparked by Clapton's suggestion that he be part of the all-star blues guitar lineup at London's Royal Albert Hall. Guy signed with Silvertone Records and released his first album, Damn Right, I've Got the Blues, in 1991.

Sam "Hogman" Patin, a guy who appeared in the 2009 crime film In the Electric Mist, played a small part.

Guy still appears at least 130 nights a year, including a month of shows at his Chicago blues club, Buddy Guy's Legends, in January.
