Harold Mabern Life

Harold Mabern Jr. (March 20, 1936 – September 17, 2019) was an American jazz pianist and composer, with a particular emphasis on the hard bop, post-bop, and soul jazz fields.

In The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, he is dubbed "one of the top post-bop pianists" in the book "One of the greatest post-bop pianists".

Early life

Mabern was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 20, 1936. He started learning drums before moving to learning piano. Since his father, who worked in a lumber yard, was able to buy him a piano from his teens, he had a right to one. 34 Mabern studied at Douglass High School before transferring to Manassas High School, but was most inspired by Newborn, Jr.'s emulating pianists Charles Thomas and Phineas Newborn Jr. Mabern moved to Chicago in 1954 after graduating, intending to attend the American Conservatory of Music. Due to a change in his parents' financial situation, he was unable to attend music college, but he took private lessons there for six months and improved his reading skills by performing with trombonist Morris Ellis' big band. 34 He also developed by listening to Ahmad Jamal and others in clubs, and "playing and practicing 12 hours a day" for the next five years, 34 years old, 34 But he remained self-taught as a pianist. In Chicago, Mabern continued to compete with Walter Perkins' MJT + 3 and others.

Mabern learned orchestration techniques from bassist Bill Lee, as well as piano comping and chord voicing from pianists Chris Anderson and Billy Wallace.
