Club career
He joined Danish club Copenhagen in early 2010.
Oviedo's name was confirmed by the English side Everton for an undisclosed sum on August 31, 2012. During a 3–0 away league victory over Swansea City in September, he made his debut as an 85th-minute replacement. During his first season with Everton, Oviedo was largely a squad player, with 14 of them as a substitute. Oviedo scored his first assist for the club in 2012 against Norwich City in a starting 11 game. In a 4–0 win over Stoke City on November 30, he scored his first goal for Everton, as well as providing an assist. Everton defeated Manchester United in the 86th minute in a 1–0 win, leading to their first victory at Old Trafford in 21 years.
Oviedo sustained a fractured left leg 18 minutes into the Stevenage vs. Everton FA Cup Fourth Round tie on January 25, 2014. He suffered the injury after a tackle on Stevenage midfielder Simon Heslop, resulting in a clean break in both his tibia and fibula.
Everton boss Roberto Martnez said immediately after the game, "A true negative today is the unfortunate occurrence, and we need to give Bryan as much help as we can now." He's had a fantastic year, and I'm really impressed with him. He's a key player in the team and he needs to recover quickly. Everyone was affected by Bryan's injury. These injuries leave a bitter aftertaste." Everton announced later that Oviedo would need surgery to repair a double fracture in his left leg. Oviedo said in May 2014 that he was unable to recover from his injury in time to be ready for the 2014 World Cup with his national team.
Oviedo returned from injury in Everton's 3–0 loss at Swansea City in the second round of the League Cup on September 23; he started the game before being replaced after 58 minutes by James McCarthy.
Darron Gibson, a former Everton teammate, and Oviedo have signed Sunderland on permanent contracts, with Oviedo committing to a three-and-a-year contract, bringing him up to the summer of 2020; Gibson has signed a one-year contract to reunite with former manager David Moyes. Oviedo defeated Crystal Palace 4–0 in Selhurst Park on February 4, 2017, making his Sunderland debut.
He re-signed for FC Copenhagen in July 2019. Oviedo's three seasons with only 33 appearances at Copenhagen came to an end in June 2022 and was not renewed.
Oviedo was a member of Major League Soccer team Real Salt Lake on August 5th.
International career
Oviedo was a competitor in the CONCACAF U17 Tournament in 2007 (a precursor to the CONCACAF U17 Championships). Oviedo played in all three games, beating Trinidad and Tobago 2–0, drawing 0–0 with Canada, and losing 2–1 to the United States. Costa Rica finished in second place in Group B and qualifying for the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The Oviedo squad for the U17 World Cup was not selected.
Two years ago, Oviedo was named in the 2009 CONCACAF U-20 Championship squad. Costa Rica's Costa Rica defeated Mexico 1–0 in their first game, drew 0–0 with Trinidad and Tobago, and defeated Canada 2–1 in the final group stage match. Oviedo was not selected in the team for the semi-final against Honduras, but the team was still playing in the final, where Costa Rica defeated the United States 31-0. Costa Rica qualified for the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup after a fruitful campaign in the U-20 Championship. Oviedo stayed in the national under 20 squad and was selected in the squad for the U-20 World Cup.
The U20 World Cup did not get off to the best of starts. In Costa Rica's first game against Brazil, Oviedo was also included in the squad that lost their final group game against Czech Republic 3–2. The three points were enough to qualify, and Costa Rica defeated hosts Egypt 2–0 in front of 81,860 in the knockout stage. Costa Rica defeated United Arab Emirates 2–1 after extra time in the quarter finals and lost 1–0 to Brazil in the semi-finals. In the third place playoff where they were defeated on penalties after a 1–1 draw, the Costa Ricans met Hungary.
On January 26, 2010, his first match with the Costa Rica national team was against Argentina.
For the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Oviedo was selected in Costa Rica's national team. Costa Rica finished second in Group A after beating Cuba 5–0 in the first round and then losing 4–1 to Mexico in the final group stage game. Costa Rica was kicked out of the tournament after a 1-1 draw with Honduras following a penalty shootout.
He was selected in Costa Rica's 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow in May 2018.
