Alvaro Saborio Life

Álvaro Alberto Saborío Chacón (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈalβaɾo saβoˈɾi.o]; born 25 March 1982) is a Costa Rican professional footballer, who plays as a forward and captains Costa Rican club San Carlos from the Primera División de Costa Rica. Saborío originally retired in 2017, but returned months later.

A full international for Costa Rica since 2002, Saborío has over 110 caps and 36 goals for the nation, whom he represented at five CONCACAF Gold Cups, in addition to one tournament each at the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, and Copa América.

Personal life

A son of former Costa Rica international Álvaro Grant MacDonald and Marlene Saborío, Saborío can speak four languages: Portuguese, Spanish, French and English.

Saborío holds a U.S. green card which qualifies him as a domestic player for MLS roster purposes.

Club career

Saboro is a product of C.F.'s Cooperative Province. Montere's youth department is responsible for Monterrey's school system. He competed with the club's reserve team in the Segunda División de México and with affiliate Coyotes de Saltillo in the Primera A.

Saborio began his work with Saprissa in Costa Rica, where he honed his profession. On August 8, 2001, he made his Costa Rican Primera División debut against Limonense. Saboro was the top goal scorer of the 2003–2004 Costa Rican season, leading with 25 goals and five above Whayne Wilson.

He has won a championship and a CONCACAF Champions Cup with Saprissa, as well as being part of the 2005 FIFA Club World Championship Toyota Cup, where Saprissa came third behind S. Paulo and Liverpool. He scored two goals and ended up tied for first scoring honors with three other players at the tournament.

After playing for Costa Rica at the 2006 World Cup, he joined FC Sion, a Swiss Super League team. He and Poland's Zbigniew Zakrzewski have forged a fruitful friendship at FC Sion.

Tony Pulis, Stoke City's manager, had been spotted in Switzerland, but he turned to Bristol City on loan, but instead he joined Bristol City.

On September 13, Saboro played his first game for Bristol City in a Championship match against Coventry City, making a big difference by setting up fellow striker Nicky Maynard. In a 1–1 draw, Saboro earned his first yellow card in English football. In Bristol City's 1–1 draw with Scunthorpe United, Saborio scored his first goal for the city.

In February 2010, he left Bristol City and his deal with FC Sion was ended, ensuring he could return to Costa Rica.

In March 2010, Saboro signed with Major League Soccer club Real Salt Lake. He had a huge influence in Salt Lake's first season: RSL boasted the best-scoring offense in MLS in 2010 (45 goals); Saboro led the way with a team-high 12 tallies. He received the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award for his efforts. He also played for the club in the CONCACAF Champions League tournament, scoring eight goals as Real Salt Lake advanced to the championship round.

Saboro was named Salt Lake's first ever Designated Player after a fruitful first season with the club, signing a four-year deal with the club on January 1, 2010.

Saboro became the club's all-time leading scorer and their key target man. Sabor'o had scored 38 goals in all competitions as of May 5, 2012, with eight of them coming from CONCACAF Champions League play.

In the 52nd minute of the 2013 MLS Cup, Saboro scored a goal. In the 76th minute, Aurélien Collin equalized his goal. He later missed his penalty kick as the game went to a penalty kick shoutout, which Sporting Kansas City won.

Saboro was traded to Washington, D.C., for Luis Silva on July 16, 2015. On July 26, 2015, he scored his first goal for United against the Philadelphia Union. Saboro won a spot in the 2015 MLS Playoffs against New York City FC on October 2nd.

Saboro re-signed with United on November 17, 2015.

Saboro revealed on November 14th that he would leave United after two seasons. For D.C. United, he played 31 games, scored 10 goals, and contributed 10 assists.

Saboro signed Deportivo Saprissa's one-year deal on January 10, 2017. Saboro resigned on February 9, 2017 after arguing with Saprissa followers.

Saboro was a leading figure in San Carlos' double championship: first in the second division, and then in the first division, they captured the Torneo de Clausura for the 2018-2019 season.

International career

Saboro was a key player for the Costa Rica national team at several levels. He was a member of the U-23 team at the 2004 Olympics, scoring the qualifying goal that earned them their place in qualifying, and then started three of the team's four games against Portugal, scoring a goal against Portugal.

Saboro made his senior debut for Costa Rica in October 2002 in a friendly match against Ecuador, and he has earned 111 caps, scoring 36 goals, placing him third on his country's all-time goalscorers list behind Rolando Fonseca and Paulo Wanchope.

Saboro, a.k.a. Pipe, has been praised for his Deportivo Saprissa's success and the numerous goals he achieved in a short period. However, after a year with Costa Rica, his Costa Rican coach got a hold of him and participated in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He was mainly a back-up for the team, behind Rónald Gómez and former Manchestet City forward Paulo Wanchope. In the inaugural match against China, he scored his first goal in the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica. Saboro was embroiled in much controversies in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, including two penalty kicks against Honduras and one for a training pitch incident in which he allegedly kicked a ball at a girl who was in the stands.

Sabor's eight times in Costa Rica's successful 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, including a hat-trick in a 4–0 away win over Guyana on June 12th and two more goals on October 16 against the same opponents. Saboro was selected to Costa Rica's 30-man provisional roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, on May 12, 2014. However, Saboro had broken the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot during a training session with the national team and would later miss the World Cup.

Saboro was in Costa Rica's squad for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning his 100th cap on July 11th at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, assisting Bryan Ruiz's goal in a 1–1 Group B draw with El Salvador; his fifth Costa Rican to make one hundred appearances.
