Gilbert M. "Broncho Billy" Anderson (March 21, 1880 – January 20, 1971) was an American actor, writer, film producer, and film director who is best known as the first film star of the Western film genre.
He was both a producer and actor for Essanay studios.
In 1958, he was given a special Academy Award for being a pioneer of the film industry.
Early life
Anderson was born Maxwell Henry Aronson in Little Rock, Arkansas, the sixth child of Henry and Esther (Ash) Aronson, both natives of New York. Leona Anderson, a child actress and singer, was his younger sister. His family was Jewish, his father's parents immigrated to the United States from Prussia, and his mother's from the Russian Empire. When he was three years old, his family moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He lived in Pine Bluff until he was 8 years old when he and his family moved to St. Louis, Missouri. He began to work in New York City when he was 18, doubling his income as a photographer's model and newspaper vendor. Edwin S. Porter, who had hired him as an actor and occasional script collaborator, met him in 1903.
Personal life and death
Anderson was married to Mollie Louise Schabbleman, and they had a child, Maxine. He lived at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, for the last two years of his life. His legs were paralyzed in later years as a result of a back injury while filming.
He died in 1971 at the age of 90 at a sanitarium in South Pasadena, California. At the Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles, he was cremated and his ashes were placed in a vault.
