Bakary Sako Career

Club career

Sako had been playing for Châteauroux since 2001, first joining the team as an academy player. In a 4–1 victory over Bastia, he made his league debut on the last matchday of the 2005–06 season as a half-time replacement. Since committing to a three-year contract, he signed his first professional contract. He was promoted to the senior squad and was issued the number 26 shirt.

Sako was limited to mainly substitute appearances during the next two seasons. In a 1–2 loss to Brest, he scored his first league goal during the 2007–08 season. Sako was an integral part of the team from 2008-2009, helping the club barely prevent relegation on the final day.

Sako left Châteauroux for Ligue 1 team Saint-Étienne, where he agreed to a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee on July 9, 2009.

Sako joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee that was forecast to be £2.2 million. He scored on his Wolves debut against Northampton Town on August 30th and also in a League Cup match against Newcastle Town, losing 3–1.

The winger adapted well to English football, scoring ten times in total and contributing eleven assists. However, his season was interrupted early in March 2013 when he tore his hamstring in a match against Bristol City, which kept him out for a majority of the season's last games, during which the team was relegated to League One.

Sako was the object of transfer rumors during Summer 2013 with a particular point of curiosity from Fulham, but the London club did not sell for less than £4 million. Due to his unpredictable future, the player did not participate in Wolves' final match of the transfer window because he "didn't appear to be in the right frame of mind." Nottingham Forest's initial bids were turned down by the club. Forest attempted to reach an agreement in October 2013, but Wolves pulled out of talks, saying that "the terms surrounding the offer were unrealistic."

Despite initial rumors regarding his future and the eventuality of his proposed move to Forest, Sako went on to have a fruitful season for the Wolves, finishing as joint top-scoring alongside Leigh Griffiths as Wolves secured the League One crown with a record points haul for the third tier. Sako was also selected in the 2013-14 season as part of the League One PFA Team of the Year, as well as four of his teammates.

Sako continued to score for Wolves and was named in the Championship PFA Team of the Year for the 2014–15 season. As the team failed to qualify in the play-offs on goal difference, he finished the season as the team's (joint) top goalscorer. Out of his deal with the club, he expressed his desire to play in the Premier League, while head coach Kenny Jackett said he wanted Sako to leave.

Following his release from Wolves, Sako joined Crystal Palace in a three-year deal on August 5, 2015. On his complete debut against Aston Villa on August 22, he scored his first goal for the club. Sako then won by 2–1 over Chelsea the next week, José Mourinho's second consecutive loss at Stamford Bridge. Sako also assisted with Joel Ward's second goal.

Sako's form began to improve under new coach Roy Hodgson's leadership, with his first goal of the season against Huddersfield in the EFL Cup. In the same tournament, he scored against Bristol City. Sako was also back scoring in the league, netting against Watford, Burnley, and Leicester. In an away loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, he also scored in the FA Cup.

West Bromwich Albion signed free agent Sako until the end of the season on October 2nd.

Sako returned to Crystal Palace on a short-term basis from January 27th, 2019–19 season. He was released on the expiration of his deal at the end of June.

Denizlispor announced the signing of free agent Sako on Twitter on July 28th. However, the club canceled the transfer due to his ankle injury history.

Pafos revealed the signing of Sako on Facebook on September 6, 2019.

Sako signed Saint-Étienne, his former club, on December 3021, extending his contract until the end of the 2021–22 season.

International career

Sako appeared in one friendly match in 2005, when the team was training for the 2005 African Under-17 Championship. He returned to the French team in the under-18 squad the following year. He was a member of France's Under-19 Championship 2007, winning the semi-finals before being disqualified by Spain. In a friendly match against Tunisia on February 11, he made his French under-21 debut on Tuesday. In the 2009 Toulon Tournament against Qatar, he scored his first under-21 goal.

On March 5, 2014, Sako was called up by the Malian national team for the first time in a friendly against Senegal. In a friendly match played in Colombes, France, he scored his first international goal against Guinea. In an Africa Cup of Nations qualification match held in Bamako on September 7, 2014, he scored the opener in a 2–0 win over Malawi in a 2–0 victory in a 2–0 victory. Sako was called up to the Mali squad for the finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea in December 2014. This was to be his first encounter with a senior international tournament.

In group D of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Sako began Mali's first two matches. Both players were drawn in 1–1 draws against Cameroon on January 20th and on January 24th, respectively. Sako scored a left-foot half-volley against Ivory Coast, which the BBC praised as the tournament's goal at that time. Sako was unable to begin the final and vital group game against Guinea due to an illness, but he did come from the bench for the final 15 minutes of the game. This resulted in a 1–1 deadlock, implying that five of the six games in group D lost 1–1, triggering the drawing of lots between Mali and Guinea to determine who qualified for the quarter finals and who went home. It was Guinea that emerged from the hat, ensuring that the Eagles were unbeaten in the tournament.
