Ashley Belal Chin (born 21 August 1982), also known as Muslim Belal, is an English actor, screenwriter, spoken word performance poet, and a Jamaican descendent. In 1999, he began his acting career and his music career in 2005.

He has appeared in a variety of stage productions, including Gone Too Far! (2007).

Chin came to prominence in the films Sket (2011) and Anuvahood (2011) as a supporting role.

He is perhaps best known for his role as Tyson in the award-winning short film The Boxer, 2011.

In addition to being the antagonist in The Intent (2016), Chin reprised his role in the prequel The Intent 2: The Come Up (2018).

In the short film The Essence (2019), he played Isaac.

In October 2019, Chin published a book titled Faith, which claims that the book is based on his conversion from the streets to Islam.

In 2020, a book-based film will be released, and Chin is expected to write and direct the film.

Chin alias "Muslim Belal" and his debut album Pray Hard in 2009 with muic and poetry, and he released his debut album Pray Hard in 2009.

Early life and education

Chin was born in Gypsy Hill, London, England. His parents are from Jamaica, and he was named after his paternal grandfather, who was Chinese. In a South London council estate, he grew up with his mother, Andrea Ellis, and elder sister, Kareena Chin. He was raised as a Christian but his youth was spent in gang culture.

Chin graduated with an A-grade in GCSE drama and left school at the age of 15. Chin and his family migrated to Thornton Heath, Croydon, in 1999.

Chin showed a natural gift for poetry from the age of 12. In 2001, he and a friend established a music studio for a band, where Chin used to play keyboards and various sound boards. The former street gang and musical group was known as Smalls at the time, and he was referred to as SMS 'South Man Syndicate,' later identified as South Muslim Soldiers.'

Personal life

Chin converted to Islam at the age of 19. He travelled to Egypt in 2004 and spent a year there to study Islam.

His mother and elder sister have also converted to Islam. He is a Manchester United Football Club fan.

Chin's Umrah (the second largest Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia) took place in June 2010. Chin lived in Kuwait City, Kuwait, from July 2011 to May 2012.

He appeared on Channel 4's Ramadan Reflections in July 2013. Chin founded ABC Life in February 2014. In June 2014, he travelled to Pakistan to give a lecture and live television interviews at Dreamworld Family Resort in Karachi.

Career

Chin began his acting career in the BBC film Storm Damage directed by Lennie James in 1999. In Roy Williams' Lift Off at the Royal Court Theatre, he made his debut as Young Mal. Chin converted to Islam in 2002, but at that time, he turned away from his work to concentrate on his faith. Chin has used the term Muslim Belal since his conversion to Islam. He appeared at the inaugural Global Peace and Unity Festival in the ExCeL Exhibition Centre, hosted by the Islam Channel in December 2005.

Chin returned to acting in 2007, where he appeared in Bola Agbaje's Laurence Olivier award-winning play Gone Too Far! Laurence Olivier was captivated by Chin's appearance that he made him reprise his role in 2008. In Roy Williams' There's Only One Wayne Matthews at the Polka Theatre, he appeared as Carl Wilkins. In August 2007, he appeared as Seales in BBC Radio 4's radio version of E. R. Braithwaite's book To Sir, With Love. In 2007, Chin appeared as a supporting actor in the television series The Bill. Chin appeared on the album with artists Rizwan Hussain, Abdullah Rolle, Khaleel Muhammad, Labbayk, and Mecca2Medina. He helped Shaam support on their UK tour in October and November 2009. Ash Chin's debut studio album Pray Hard was released on August 15, 2009 by Halal Dawa Records under his alias Muslim Belal. Chin's poetry blends spirituality with social issues and his own personal history. The album includes motifs of repentance, Islam's conversion, offering tips, praising Allah, and supplicing to Allah.

He appeared at the Global Peace and Unity Festival in October 2010, where he also launched his second album The Transition. Lowkey made the album on display on October 23, 2010, which was followed by Lowkey. Ashley Chin came to the United States in February 2011 and appeared at the Saint Louis University Muslim Student Association Annual Conference. This was the first of its kind and attracted an international audience.

Chin co-wrote and appeared in Victim, which was a lead role for Michael Maris in 2011. The film was released in UK cinemas on June 22, 2012. Ashley Madekwe, Jason Maza, and co-stars Adam Deacon, David Harewood and Giggs appear in the film. The film follows a young man's efforts to escape from a life of violent crime with the support of a healthy country girl who decides to stay with his friend in the city but is retaliated against. Chin had also appeared in Waking the Dead, Silent Witness, and Casualty.

Chin appeared in the 2011 films Cherry Tree Lane and Anuvahood, as well as a cameo in Sket. He was also named as the 2010 Trailblazer at the Edinburgh International Film Festival for the role of Asad in Cherry Tree Lane. Chin appeared in The Boxer, a seven-minute short film starring Paul Barber in April 2012. Henry Blake, written by Daniel Bailey and produced by Scruffbag Productions, was the winner of "Project 7." In the 2016 film The Intent starring Scorcher, Krept, and Konan, he appeared in The Intent. He resurrectated his role in the 2018 sequel The Intent 2: The Come Up, which was released in 2018. Ghetts and Popcaan appeared in the film as well. Chin had also played a supporting role in EastEnders. In two episodes, Sam appeared in two episodes. Chin unveiled the single Life on January 6, 2019 after a year long absence from music.

Chin produced and released a short film in promotion of his album Wamp 2 Dem. The Essence is a short film that was released on Giggs' YouTube channel on Tuesday and is influenced by Wamp 2 Dem's soundtrack. It was written by Michael 'Buck' Maris, Ashley Chin, and April Walker and directed by Myles Whittingham. Chin also appeared in the film, while Giggs appears in a cameo role. Chin appeared in Giggs before filming Victim.

In October 2019, Ashley Chin published Faith, an autobiography. Chin said he learned more from traveling around the world than he did from school. "I wrote about my life and changed people's lives," the singer said. I was born yesterday, and today I live, and tomorrow I die. "I put it all in a book for them to remember by." Chin revealed that he is directing and writing a film based on the book each month. It's a coming of age tale about a South London boy who finds faith in Islam in order to avoid gang life. He goes to Egypt to reclaim his faith in life, but he must return to keep a promise to his best friend's, fatherless daughter, and the past. It's a film based on Ashley Chin's true story. It follows a young South London boy Ash's life, his struggle to find meaning in life, and Islam's revelation. Hope Ikpoku, Keira Chansa, and Fady Elsayed appear in the film, which is expected to be published in 2022.
