Sir Arvi Hillar Parbo (born in 1926) was a business executive who was concurrently chairman of three of Australia's top companies, Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals, Munich Resurrection, and Zurich Australian Insurance.
Early life
Parbo was born in Tallinn, Estonia, and escaped from his homeland before the Soviet invasion in 1944, ending up in a refugees camp (DP camp) in Germany. He immigrated to Australia in 1949 after attending the Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany from 1946 to 1948. In 1955, he graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering degree.
Career
Arvi Parbo joined Western Mining Corporation in 1956 and spent the next 12 years as Underground Surveyor, Underground Assistant, Technical Assistant, and Deputy General Superintendent. In 1968, he was first elected General Manager and then became a Director. In 1971, he was named Deputy Managing Director and later became Chief Director in the same year. Parbo was appointed chairman and managing director of Western Mining Corporation in 1974.
For the first time in 1977, the Arvi Parbo Medal was awarded to an engineering student from the University of Adelaide. In partnership with Engineers Australia, the Sir Arvi Parbo Medal is given every year as of 2017.
Arvi Parbo was selected a Knight Bachelor for his contributions to industry in 1978 New Year Honours.
Parbo resigned as the company's Executive Chairman in 1986 after abandoning his role as the company's managing director. He resigned as an executive in 1990, but was later promoted to non-executive chairman and resigned from this position in 1999.

Parbo was appointed chairman of BHP in 1987 and was appointed chairman in 1990 until his resignation in 1992.
Parbo was named a Companion of the Order of Australia in June 1993 and had his portrait painted by the artist William Dargie. The work is on display at Canberra's National Portrait Gallery.
Parbo was a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE). He served as ATSE's president from 1995 to 1997. In 1997, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Victoria (FRSV).
Parbo died in Melbourne on May 1st, 2019, at the age of 93.
