James McLamore Life

James Whitman "Jim" McLamore (May 30, 1926 – August 9, 1996) was known for his contribution to the establishment and expansion of the Burger King fast food franchise alongside David Edgerton.

He was Burger King's first CEO and introduced the Whopper sandwich.

Early life

McLamore was born in 1926 in New York City. His father migrated them to the United States from his grandmother's house after the 1929 Stock Market crash. He lost his mother quickly after, and his family suffered during this time. McLamore attended Mount Hermon School in Northfield before attending Cornell University's School of Hotel Management. He arrived at Cornell with only $11 in his pocket, but he graduated in 1947. During his time at Cornell, he served in the United States Navy and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity's New York Alpha Chapter. McLamore married Nancy Nichol of Miami, Florida, after graduating from Cornell.

McLamore's first job in restaurant management was at a YMCA cafeteria in Wilmington, Delaware, before expanding to open his Colonial Inn, a 24-hour fast food restaurant. He left and started the Brickell Bridge Restaurant in Miami, Florida, which is located at 550 Brickell Avenue in downtown Miami, Florida.

James McLamore Career

Careers

Edgerton first opened Insta Burger King in Miami, Florida, on March 1, 1954. He met McLamore three months later on June 1 and formed the Burger King Corporation. Burger King opened in 1957 and debuted the Whopper burger, although the word "Insta" was also dropped from the name. Edgerton, who was dissatisfied with Insta's malfunctioning Insta machines, designed the flame broiler that would be Burger King's signature.

McLamore, 1961, won the national rights to Burger King and sparked growth around the world. In 1962, McLamore and Edgerton established two support companies: Distron and Davmor Industries. Distron became the food distribution center for all the stores. Any new store's Davmor Industries plant was the manufacturing plant that made all of the kitchen equipment.

Burger King's business was growing, but organic growth became impossible in keeping up as McDonald's went public in 1965. In an effort to expand under the brand, the pair sold the 274 store chain to Pillsbury in 1967. McLamore was Burger King's CEO until 1972, when he stepped down as Pillsbury's business was going in a different direction. He served as Chairman of the company from 1976 to 1976.
