Ita Buttrose Career

Career

Buttrose was appointed women's editor of the Telegraph at just 23 years old. She won a racetrack fashion competition run by a rival newspaper in 1966, for which the first prize was a trip to Expo 67 in Montreal. Buttrose and her husband then stayed in England for a time on the British national magazine Woman's Own before giving birth to her first child, Kate, in 1967. It was after her daughter's birth that she received a letter from Australian Consolidated Press's chief, Sir Frank Packer, who offered her the Telegraph's women's editor. The family then returned to Australia.

Buttrose was selected as the founding editor of a new Australian women's newspaper in 1971. This was supposed to be an Australian edition of the renowned American magazine Cosmopolitan, but Hearst Magazines sold the Cosmopolitan rights to Fairfax's longtime Packer, so Packer and Buttrose decided to create Cleo, a new issue that would have appeared in 1972, several months ahead of its rival, Cosmopolitan. Cleo was a instant hit, selling its entire original print run in just two days; the magazine broke new ground in Australian mainstream publishing, with the first nude male centerfold (actor Jack Thompson) and frank articles on female sexuality and other topics that culminated in the introduction of the first sealed section in an Australian newspaper. Buttrose became pregnant with her second child, Ben, in the early months of the publication, but it was an extraordinary feat for a woman to have to give up permanent employment after being pregnant.

Buttrose worked in Cleo from 1975-1977, then editor-in-chief of both magazines from 1976 to 1981, before being appointed Editor of the Australian Consolidated Press Women's Division from 1978 to 1981. She left the Packers in 1981 after their rival Rupert Murdoch offered her the job of Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, making her the first female editor of a major metropolitan newspaper in Australia, a position she held until 1984. She made regular appearances on radio and television, and in 1980, her media fame led to her appearance on rock band Cold Chisel's album "Ita," which was included on their hit East album.

Buttrose, Chairperson of the National Advisory Committee on AIDS (NACAIDS) from 1984 to 1988, was the chairperson. On one occasion, she appeared personally on national television to announce that donating blood at a blood bank did not pose a risk of contracting AIDS (the fear of which had led to a significant decrease in donations).

Buttrose founded Capricorn Publishing Company and launched Ita, Buttrose's first magazine, but this soon fell apart, and she founded the Good Life Publishing Company, a lifestyle newspaper aimed at dog owners.

Buttrose is also a prolific writer, and she has written nine books, including her autobiography, A Passionate Life. A Guide to Australian Etiquette, Penguin, was published in 2011.

Buttrose appeared on Beauty and the Beast in the 1990s and early 2000s. Buttrose was also a regular commentator on the Nine Network breakfast show Today and was at one point expected to replace Kerri-Anne Kennerley in the network's morning slot.

Buttrose joined Network Ten in June 2013 where she spent a week for the station alongside Joe Hildebrand, Sarah Harris, Denise Drysdale, and Jessica Rowe. In late 2013, the show premiered in late 2013. However, Buttrose cut her appearances on the program to just twice a week in order to spend more time with her grandchildren.

In episode 7547 of The Bold and the Beautiful, Ita appeared alongside Brendan Jones and Amanda Keller as a news reporter, airing in March 2017.

Buttrose resigned as a panelist on Studio 10 in April 2018 to refocus on other aspects of her life, including spending more time with her grandchildren and writing.

Since leaving Network Ten, Buttrose has appeared on the Seven Network and substituted for Sonia Kruger on Today Extra on the Nine Network. She was elected chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 2019 (ABC).
