Antonis Fotsis Career

Professional career

Fotsis, a native of Maroussi, Athens, began his career as one of Europe's top prospects. Fotsis began his work in 1996 with the Greek League club Ilysiakos. When playing in the club's senior team, he quickly established a reputation as a good young player. He then moved to Panathinaikos (PAO) in Greece, just shy of his 16th birthday. It's a fact of immense importance that he began his career as a point guard and then progressed to the small forward and then power forward positions. He was later identified as one of Europe's top power forwards due to his early guard service. He twice participated in the Nike Hoop Summit All-World Team (1998, 1999), being Greece's most prominent young talent at the time. He had little playing time in his first two seasons with Panathinaikos, but he went on to be one of the team's key players during the 1999–00 season. He won the EuroLeague championship that same season with Panathinaikos despite being only nineteen. He was a starter on the Panathinaikos team that made it to the FIBA SuproLeague Finals a year ago.

Fotsis was chosen by the Vancouver Grizzlies (who were relocated to Memphis right after the draft) in the 2nd round (48th overall) of the 2001 NBA draft. He appeared in 28 games for the Grizzlies during the 2001–02 NBA season, averaging 3.9 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. On January 19, 2002, he scored a career high 21 points against the Orlando Magic. His last NBA game was April 17th, 2002, in a 94 - 109 loss to the Seattle SuperSonics, where he scored 10 points and 6 rebounds.

He returned to Panathinaikos for the 2002-03 season and became one of the team's best players, despite scoring an average of 14.5 points per game in EuroLeague. He won both the Greek Cup and the Greek League championship that year with PAO. He joined Real Madrid, the Spanish League's best-known team.

With Real Madrid, he was one of the key contributors to the teams that made it to the EuroCup Finals in 2004 and 2005, and he also won the Spanish League championship in 2005. He moved to Dynamo Moscow, Russia's Superleague team, in 2005. Fotsis, along with fellow Greek player Lazaros Papadopoulos, was one of the Russian team's two leaders, and he was one of the team's two key figures, with Dynamo Moscow.

Fotsis and Dynamo won the EuroCup championship in 2006. He was in the EuroLeague quarterfinals with Dynamo one year later, where his team lost to Panathinaikos. Fotsis scored 22 points and set a single-game EuroLeague record of 26.4 percent with 24 rebounds, helping Dynamo win by 68-65 overtime on March 21, 2007.

He returned to Panathinaikos in 2008 when he first arrived. It was his second return to the club, and he was in the starting lineup for the team when they won the coveted Triple Crown in 2008-09 season. Fotsis was a key contributor to the Triple Crown winners, with his solid defensive play and clutch baskets. In the 2009 Euroleague Final Four, he played more minutes than any other "Greens" player. Panathinaikos won the Greek League championship for the second time in the 2009–10 season. Fotsis was named Greece League MVP for the month of April earlier this season. He spent more minutes than any other "Greens" player in the EuroLeague this season, demonstrating his defensive skills as well.

He signed with Olimpia Milano of the Italian League for two seasons in July 2011. Panathinaikos announced on July 2, 2013 that they had signed Fotsis for three seasons. Fotsis signed a new two-year deal with Panathinaikos in 2016. He left Panathinaikos on July 25, 2017.

In August 2017, he announced his return to Ilysiakos, the first team of his professional career back in 1996.

National team career

Fotsis, Greece's junior national team, earned the bronze medal at the 1998 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. He competed with the Greek national basketball team at the EuroBasket 2003 and the 2004 Summer Olympics.
