Anika Noni Rose (born September 6, 1972) is an American actress and singer best known for her role in Caroline, or Change, and her starring role as Lorrell Robinson in the 2006 film Dreamgirls.

In Walt Disney Pictures' 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog, she also played Tiana, Disney's first African-American princess.

Rose played Beneatha Younger in A Raisin in the Sun's revival in 2014, for which she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

In 2011, she was named a Disney Legend.

Early life

Rose was born in Bloomfield, Connecticut, to Claudia and John Rose, a corporate counsel. She began her acting career in Bloomfield high school and was involved in a school production during her freshman year. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in theatre from Florida A&M University, then studied drama at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

Rose left New York without a single job. Rusty in Broadway's Footloose appeared for three months. Eli's Comin' Off-Broadway and Me and Mrs. Jones with Lou Rawls in Philadelphia followed Footloose with numerous workshops and two musicals from pre-existing song catalogs. Both of the full-scale tuners had been expected for transfers, but no one made it happen after their limited engagements ended. Emmie Thibodeaux in Caroline was the subject of Rose's big Broadway debut. Or Change. Or Change, or Change, she was given the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Featured Actress and the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Caroline in 2004. Phylicia Rashad and Janet Jackson appeared in Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls in 2010. Rose performed in A Raisin in the Sun's revival in 2014, earning a nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Kaya appeared in Temptation in 2003 and performed in Temptation, followed by Surviving Christmas as a member of the choir, on her debut in King of the Bingo Game. Lorrell Robinson appeared in Dreamgirls as Lorrell Robinson, Beyoncé Knowles, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy in 2006. Rose appeared in the films Just Add Water and Razor.

Rose is best known for her appearance in Disney's 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog as the lead character Tiana; the actress is Disney's first African-American princess. Rose said at the time, "Not only is [Tania] the first black princess, she's the first American princess." So, the scope and the impact are much bigger than people even realize." Rose said that she wished that her appearance in the film would help young brown-skinned children by seeing someone who looks like them in a Disney film. According to the film's creators, the film, which was released in 2009, was entirely coincidental. However, several commentators noted how coincidence contributed to the positive representation of African-Americans.

The Princess and the Frog for children from the Charter Oak Cultural Center, a non-profit multi-cultural arts center in Hartford, Connecticut, was held in Rose. One nomination for an NAACP Image Award and three nominations for the Black Reel Awards was earned for Rose's role in the film. She received the Black Reel Award for Best Outstanding Voice Performance.

On August 19, 2011, Rose was named a Disney Legend. "I always wanted to be a part of a Disney film," Rose said, "but I never dreamed of being a princess." It's been said with aplomb that this is and how the dream comes true, that it's bigger and stronger than I even imagined it."

Disney revealed in June 2020 that they would be reworking their flume ride Splash Mountain in their American theme parks with characters from The Princess and the Frog. "It's thrilling," Rose said. Rose created a weekly series in which she read bedtime stories to young children to help them defuse their anxiety during the lockdown. "I love reading to children, and I wanted to give our children something soft and soothing in this jarring period of time." I was hoping that a bedtime tale would be the right idea. "I can speak to the ones who know it best, without leaving home." Rose also stated that she wanted to help children be silly, use their imaginations, and discover a love of books as a child.
