She is best known for her appearances in Alan Parker's The Commitments (1991) and as Tina in John Boorman's The General (1998).

She has appeared in films and television series both in the United Kingdom and the United States.

She is also a stage actress.

Personal life

Ball has two children. She speaks fluent French and is a certified pilates and yoga instructor. She plays guitar and has released an album in 2020.

Career

Imelda Quirke, a backing singer in Alan Parker's The Commitments, was her breakthrough role in 1991. Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement produced the short-lived television series Over the Rainbow in 1993, which she also wrote the music. In 1994, she appeared in My Girl 2, where she performed a version of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile." She appeared on Alan Parker's album in 1996 as she sang backing vocals for the Evita soundtrack.

Ball appeared in John Boorman's The General in 1997, where she played Tina Lawless, the sister in law, and mistress of real life Dublin crime boss Martin Cahill. Ball appeared in a variety of UK television series including Doc Martin, Shameless, and Mr Selfridge throughout the 2000s. Maggie Townsend made her BBC soap opera EastEnders debut on May 26, 2008; her last appearance was on September 11, 2008.
