Early life
Brewster was born in Concord, Massachusetts. Hathaway Brewster (née Tew) and her father, Galen Brewster, worked as school administrators.
Brewster grew up in Massachusetts and then moved to Parsons School of Design in New York City. She made her acting debut in her first year and then dropped out of design school to pursue her acting career. Brewster moved to San Francisco in the mid 1990s and enrolled in acting classes.
Personal life
Brewster revealed on the March 30, 2006 episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien that Hugh Hefner would like her to appear for Playboy. She seriously considered the opportunity, but although she said she loved Playboy more than magazines like Maxim and FHM, and her parents gave her their blessing, she eventually turned down the offer.
She has worked with the Los Angeles Young Storytellers Program as an actress.
Brewster became engaged to Steve Damstra, a member of the bands Folded Light and Whirlwind Heat, on March 17, 2013. Brewster and Damstra married in Los Angeles on November 28, 2014, at a reception attended by Matthew Gray Gubler, their close friend and co-star in Brewster's Criminal Minds. The couple lives in Los Angeles as of 2016.
Career
Brewster hosted a late-night talk show in San Francisco, called Paget, on KPIX-TV from 1994 to 1995. In the fourth season of NBC's Friends, Kathy first gained notoriety in her recurring role as Kathy. She appeared in Andy Richter's Universe and Huff. Ms. Indestructible, the female protagonist in James Gunn's low-budget superhero film The Specials (2000), she appeared on film. In the independent film The Big Bad Swim, she played Amy Pierson, a calculus instructor afraid of the sea.

Brewster was on the show Criminal Minds for a long time, playing multilingual Supervisor Emily Prentiss until the show's sixth season, when she and A. J. Cook were released from their contracts by CBS in a cost-cutting measure. Both she and Cook were rehired and retained for the following season, owing to fan complaints. Brewster announced on Deadline in February 2012 that she was leaving Criminal Minds at the end of the season to return to her comedic and sitcom roots. In season nine and season 11, Brewster reprised her role as Emily Prentiss. Brewster appeared on Criminal Minds once more in 2016 as a series regular.
