Life and career
Porter, who was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, is the great-granddaughter of Worcester, Massachusetts, rabbi Joseph Klein's prominent Worcester rabbi. The Charlotte Klein Dance Center was owned by her grandmother. Ric Porter, Porter's father, was co-founder, lead singer, and songwriter of the Worcester-based band Zonkaraz. Laura Klein's mother, Laura Klein, also worked with dance, mentoring Diane and Elaine Klimaszewski, who appeared on Star Search in 1987 in the junior dance category before they became known as the Coors Light Twins. Porter heard her singing in the hotel lobby and booked her to appear on the next episode when she was in Los Angeles for the twins' appearance on Star Search. Porter has been singing and performing since the age of three; at age five, she became the youngest Star Search competitor to win the competition. She appeared on Pee Wee's Playhouse as one of the playhouse gang in Season 2.
Porter appeared in numerous films as a child; she became known for playing the title role in the 1991 film Curly Sue opposite Jim Belushi. On television, she appeared as Lynn Redgrave's youngest daughter on the short-lived ABC sitcom Chicken Soup in 1989. She had been slated to appear on Perfect Strangers as a new regular cast member, but she was forced to leave after just one episode.
Porter continued acting at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, where she was a member of a theater company and appeared in numerous productions. Porter, a freshman, portrayed Anita in West Side Story, while a senior took the lead in Cinderella. Porter's former high school drama teacher said she was not surprised by the result after she won The Voice in 2016. Porter was up against Lacy Mandigo's "California Dreamin" by The Mamas & the Papas as a rock version in the battle rounds. Porter defeated Daniel Passino in the knockout rounds.
