Alicia Roanne Witt (born August 21, 1975) is an American actress, singer-songwriter, and pianist.
She first rose to fame as a child actress after being discovered by David Lynch, who portrayed her as Alia Atreides in his film Dune (1984) and in a guest appearance in his television series Twin Peaks (1990). Witt later appeared in Mr. Holland's Opus (1995), and as a terrified college student in the horror film Urban Legend (1998).
She appeared in Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky (2001), Two Week Notice (2002), Last Holiday (2005), and the thrilling 88 Minutes (2007).

Early life and education
Witt was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on August 21, 1975, to Diane (née Pietro), a junior high school reading teacher and Robert Witt, a science teacher and photographer. She was a Guinness World Record holder for the longest hair from 1989 to 1996. Ian is her brother. Witt has been described as a child prodigy in speaking at age two and reading by the age of four. When she heard her recite Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet on the television show That's Incredible, her acting ability was recognized by director David Lynch in 1980. At the age of five, there was no longer a child in the United States. Lynch began working in film and television before Witt earned her high-school equivalency license at age 14. Witt took four piano lessons a week, including from a Boston University professor, who also competed nationally, from 10 to 14.
Personal life
Witt's parents were discovered dead in their Worcester home on December 20, 2021. Witt's parents' cause of death was announced on February 24, 2022, as "probable cardiac dysrhythmia" due to the cold of their improperly heated house, which was sorely neglected. Witt revealed in a Facebook post that her parents were fiercely independent and refused any assistance with home repairs. Witt announced a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in early 2022, in late May/June 2022.
Career
Witt's discovery led to the casting of the "flame-haired" child in the film Dune (1984), as Paul Atreides' sister Alia; she turned eight during filming. She appeared in a episode of Twin Peaks again as the younger sister of Lara Flynn Boyle's character Donna.
Her acting experience paved the way for small roles in Mike Figgis' Liebestraum (1991) and the 1994 film The Disappearance of Vonnie (1994). Witt gained her first lead role in a film in 1994, playing a disturbed, murderous teenager in Fun, and receiving the Sundance Film Festival's Special Jury Award. In the episode "The Missing Ingredient," Witt was then cast in Four Rooms as Madonna's lover.
In the role of Cybill Shepherd's daughter, Zoey Woodbine, in the sitcom Cybill, Witt was introduced to a larger audience.
