Alexander Vlahos (born 30 July 1988) is a Welsh actor best known for his role in the Canal+ television series Versailles as Duke of Orléans and as a character in the BBC drama Merlin.
Early life
Vlahos was born in Tumble, Carmarthenshire, before heading to Llantrisant, Mid Glamorgan. He is the son of a Greek father and a Welsh mother and speaks both Welsh and English. He competed ice hockey from the age of eight to 18, for the Cardiff Devils, Great Britain, and Captained Wales. His fascination with the sport began as a young child, and he continues to be a fan of the media franchise. He trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, graduating in 2009.
Career
He first appeared in BBC Wales' Crash in 2009, portraying Dylan. In a week-long storyline titled "Master of the Universe," in which he played Lewis Cutler, he appeared in the daytime medical soap opera Doctors. At the British Soap Awards in 2010, the episodes were then selected for "Best Single Episode" and "Spectacular Scene of the Year." He appeared in Pen Talar and The Indian Doctor as well as the film Bright Lights in 2010.
He earned the title of Private Keenan in Privates, a mini-television series about conscripts in the National Service set in the 1960s, for which he shaved his head. In series five of Merlin, he appeared as Mordred, a role played by Asa Butterfield in the first two series.
He appeared in Big Finish Productions' audio series The Confessions Of Dorian Gray from 2012 to 2016. He has also written one of the episodes "The Mayfair Monster" which was released in October 2013, and the Bernice Summerfield box set New Frontiers, which was released in April 2013.
Vlahos appeared in Fortune's Fool at The Old Vic from 6 December 2013 to 2006. In a recent revival starring Iain Glen and Richard McCabe, Mike Poulton's interpretation of Turgenev's play was directed by Lucy Bailey.
It was revealed in July 2015 that Bertie Potts would appear in the Doctor Who mini audiobook series The Diary of River Song set in the Doctor Who universe, alongside Alex Kingston.
Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, portrayed Louis XIV's brother in the Franco-Canadian historical television series Versailles, about life in the French court since 2015. The lighter side of Philippe is explored in early 2016 in the first time for Vlahos to portray a rather lighthearted character for a lengthy period of time. Vlahos appeared in the 2016 docudrama Barbarians Rising, a global co-production for The History Channel, portraying Roman emperor Valentinian in a single episode. In one episode of Genius, National Geographic Channel's first scripted series, he also portrayed Romanian philosopher and mathematician Maurice Solovine.
Vlahos appeared in Max Gill's La Ronde, a modernized, gender-neutral version of Arthur Schnitzler's play, from 11 February to 11 March 2017. The ten characters were randomly selected onstage every night by a roulette wheel. Hamlet was the title character in the 2017 Big Finish Productions audio drama.
In summer 2018, Vlahos appeared in Romeo and Juliet, as well as Catesby in Richard III, before returning to the Park Theatre in London to play Captain Hook and Mr Darling in a stage performance of Peter Pan.
