Career
Julian moved to New York in 1975, establishing the Alexander Julian Company. Julian consolidated his businesses in the 1990s under a venture capital fund that later liquidated its fashion interests in 1995. He had practically lost his clothing companies. Julian later rebuilt his companies, starting with his furniture collection, which he had started in 1994 and wasn't consolidated under the venture fund.
When the Charlotte Hornets first joined the NBA, Julian created the uniforms and re-designed the University of North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball uniforms. Following Dean Smith's request, he fabricated the trademark argyle pattern down the sides of the uniform, bolder trim, and used different fabrics for the 1991-92 season. In 1990, he conceived the stadium seating for the Charlotte Knights baseball team, using seats in fourteen different colors to produce a pattern not similar to a textile pattern.
Julian modernized traditional menswear in the 1970s with sleek new silhouettes and fabrics, as well as introducing new colors and color combinations, becoming the first American fashion designer to design his own fabric. He founded "Colours by Alexander Julian," a profitable menswear clothing line launched in 1981. His textile work is part of the Smithsonian's permanent collection. He later expanded to furniture and home furnishings, and in 2008, he switched his furniture licent to Vaughan-Bassett.
Julian designed the clothing for the Newman-Hay IndyCar team in 1990, which included drivers Mario and Michael Andretti.
Julian was the costume designer for the 1992 Robert Altman film The Player. For the Chapel Hill firm, Performance Bicycle, he created a line of men's moisture-wicking cycling shirts that can be worn to lunch or the office after cycling.
