Alexander Medawar Garland (born 26 May 1970) is an English writer and filmmaker.

He came to fame in the late 1990s with his book The Beach, which caused some commentators to identify Garland as a key voice of Generation X. He later received praise for the screenplays of the films 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), Never Let Me Go (2010), and Dredd (2012).

He co-wrote Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010) and served as a story supervisor on DmC: Devil May Cry (2013). Garland made his directorial debut with Ex Machina, a science fiction film that explores the human body's connection with artificial intelligence; the film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 2014.

He has also been nominated for Best Screenplay, Best Script, and Best British Independent Film, according to BIFA's.

Annihilation, Jeff VanderMeer's second film, was a critical hit.

Early life

Garland was born in London, England, and the son of psychologist Caroline (née Medawar) and political cartoonist Nicholas Garland. He has a younger brother and two older paternal half-siblings. Peter Medawar and writer Jean Medawar, both Nobel Prize-winning British biologists, are among his maternal grandparents.

He was educated at University College School and later earned a History of Art degree from the University of Manchester.

Career

The Beach, Garland's first book, was published in 1996. It's based on Garland's travels around Europe and Thailand that it tells the tale of a young English backpacker who discovers an unspoiled seashore populated by a group of like-minded backpackers. The book is praised for its references to opioid culture, sequences of hallucinations, and unique representations of excess and utopia. The beach received positive feedback at first, and with word of mouth exposure, the book gained in esteem. Garland would later discuss his dissatisfaction with The Beach's fame. "I never felt secure with it (the book)" - "I never felt comfortable with it." By the time of 1999, the Beach has been translated into 25 different languages and has sold close to 700,000 copies. It was turned into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In BBC's The Big Read poll, the novel ranked 103 in 2003.

The Tesseract (1998) in Garland is a non-linear story set in Manila, Philippines, starring many interwoven characters. The novel is characterized by a post-modernist narrative style and structure. It explores a variety of topics, including love and violence within each character's life and culture, as well as apparently insignificant conduct and the consequences of those characters' behaviours. The Tesseract did not appreciate The Beach's academic or commercial success, but it does have a film version.

Garland has expressed his passion for travel (particularly backpacking) and his love of Manila, both of which inspired his work.

Garland wrote the screenplay for Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later, starring Cillian Murphy in 2002. The script was inspired by 1970s zombie films and British science fiction, such as The Day of the Triffids, according to him. For 28 Days Later, video games such as the Resident Evil series also had a role, with Garland lauding the first game for resurrecting the zombie genre. The "Rage" virus was inspired by real-world viruses such as Ebola and filoviruses. His script of the film received a Best Screenplay award at the 2004 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

Garland wrote a screenplay for a Halo film version in 2005. Although the film was later cancelled, D. B. Weiss and Josh Olson rewrote this script for a 2008 release. He wrote the screenplay for the film Sunshine in 2007, his second screenplay to be directed by Danny Boyle and actor Cillian Murphy. On 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to 28 Days Later, Garland appeared as an executive producer. He wrote the screenplay for the 2010 film Never Let Me Go, which is based on Kazuo Ishiguro's book. He also wrote the script for Dredd, an extension of the Judge Dredd comic book series from 2000 AD. In 2018, Karl Urban, who played the eponymous role in the film, said it was Garland who deserved praise for also directing Dredd.

Garland made his directorial debut with Ex Machina, a 2014 feature film based on his own life and screenplay. Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Oscar Isaac are among the characters. At the 2015 Gerardmer Film Festival, the film received a Jury Prize and earned Garland a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.

Annihilation (2018), Garland's second film was based on Jeff VanderMeer's 2014 science fiction book of the same name. Garland has described it as "an adaptation [that] was a memory of the book] rather than book-referenced screenwriting] in order to capture the "dream like nature" and tone of his reading experience. The film was released in February 2018, and it was released in 2016.

Garland was hired to produce his third film, Men, starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear, in January 2021. After the death of her ex-husband's husband, the young woman goes on a solo holiday to the English countryside. Garland's fourth film, Civil War, starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and current collaborators Stephen McKinley and Cailee Spaeny, was announced earlier this year.

Garland wrote, produced, produced, and supervised the eight-episode miniseries "mysterious continuings at a tech firm" for FX; the series premiered on FX on Hulu in August 2018; he also wrote about the "mysterious ongoings at a tech firm" for FX; Sonoya Mizuno, an ex Machina and Annihilation actress, stars alongside Nick Offerman, James Grenier, Stephen McKinley, Cailee Spaeny, and Alison Pill.
