Scott Aukerman (born July 2, 1970) is an American writer, actor, comedian, television personality, director, producer, and podcast host.

Starting as a writer and performer in the later seasons of the sketch series Mr. Show, Aukerman is best known as the host of the weekly comedy podcast Comedy Bang! Bang! as well as the IFC original television series of the same name.

Aukerman is the co-creator of Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis and co-founder of the Earwolf podcast network.

Early life

Aukerman was born in Savannah, Georgia to Burt and Linda Aukerman. He grew up in Orange County, California, attending Cypress High School and the Orange County School of the Arts, studying acting and musical theater and writing plays in his spare time. Aukerman was raised in a religiously observant household, attending a Baptist church three times a week until college. He hosted a public-access television show called Centurion Highlights, based on the school's mascot. In a 2015 interview, Aukerman said "I'm still doing that same show, just with celebrities instead of my high school cafeteria." He started a short-lived band, The Naked Postmen, with Adrian Young, who went on to be the drummer for No Doubt.

While attending Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, he and fellow student B. J. Porter began writing together when they were both scripting and performing in a radio show called Lutz Radio.

Personal life

Since 2008, Aukerman has been married to actress, director, and Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ showrunner Kulap Vilaysack. The couple had a dog named Rocky, who died in 2016. They now have two dogs named Georgia Michaela and Molly Ringwald. Aukerman is a stated longtime fan of comic books. He previously collected DVDs, and is an avid filmgoer and fan of cinema venues. On the 22nd September 2022 episode of the Add to Cart Podcast it was revealed that Aukerman and his wife were using a surrogate to have a baby.

Aukerman and Porter began performing at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles under the moniker "The Fun Bunch," a term used to parody improvisation groups at the time.

Mr. Show co-creator Bob Odenkirk was in the audience for the second performance, and the pair was soon selected to write for and occasionally appear on the show in its fourth season. Aukerman and the remainder of the staff were nominated for Emmy in 1999. Aukerman appeared on the show sporadically, most notably as the model Theo Brixton in the Taint Magazine sketch.

Aukerman and Porter, most notable Run Ronnie Run! since the show's cancellation, they delved into writing film and television scripts, most notably Run Ronnie Run! In The Pick of Destiny, the first draft of the film Tenacious D. On the animated film Shark Tale, he and Porter received a "Additional Dialogue" award in 2004. They continued to write an unproduced script for the sequel as well as an unproduced Shrek spin-off film based on Puss in Boots. MTV Films acquired Kanan Rhodes: Unkillable Servant of Justice in 2007, but it is currently unproduced. Also in 2007, Aukerman's "joke record" screamed over new soft-rock hits, as well as Scott Aukerman's Koo Roo's Greatest Hits, which featured Aukerman and Sarah Silverman program writer Jon Schroeder shouting over current soft-rock hits. This was the first time AST Records had a limited run.

Porter, a beer enthusiast, had a quick visit to the bar shortly after it opened and had fun with M Bar owner Joe Reynolds. Porter convinced Reynolds to start a comedy show to help companies, after seeing how empty M Bar was. In 2005, the production was moved to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in order to gain more creative autonomy. On September 11, 2007, a Comedy Death-Ray CD taped partially in San Francisco at the SF Sketchfest and partially at their fourth-anniversary. The CD included Aukerman, comedians David Cross, Patton Oswalt, Paul F. Tompkins, and other CDR regulars.

For the internet site Super Deluxe, Aukerman and Porter produced many internet shorts starring Comedians and Porter. These included three episodes of The Brody Stevens Interview Challenge and two episodes of Lake Charles Lake, in which he also appeared. They made more short films in 2008, but they were shut down and folded into Adult Swim before they could air.

Aukerman and B. J. Porter developed and produced a sketch pilot called The Right Now in 2007. Show based on Fox's show. However, in late 2007, the network decided against ordering it to series. After the news, cast member Casey Wilson was immediately hired as a featured cast member of Saturday Night Live. Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis was a short film on the show that later became part of the internet site Funny Or Die, becoming one of the country's most popular films.

Aukerman was the host of a three-night comedy interview series called Comedy Death-Ray, where he interviews actors and designers of shows that the network airs, including The Ben Stiller Show, The Larry Sanders Show, Mr. Show, Freaks & Geeks, Undeclared, and Arrested Development, beginning January 3, 2011.

Aukerman and Porter resigned in 2011, and Comedy Bang, the Comedy Death-Ray live show, was renamed Comedy Bang!

Aukerman made the decision that he should start his own comedy podcast as a frequent observer and supporter of the award-winning podcast Never Not Funny with Jimmy Pardo. On May 1, 2009, Aukerman began to host Comedy Death-Ray Radio, a comedy-themed radio show based on the live broadcast on Los Angeles radio station Indie 103.1. The show remained on Fridays at 12 p.m. Pacific, but it was then released by the Earwolf podcasting network in 2010. Every show on iTunes and the Earwolf website is available on iTunes and the Earwolf website, and many million times have been downloaded many millions of times.

Aukerman hosts, including frequent guest contributors Paul F. Tompkins, Lauren Lapkus, Neil Campbell, Mike Hanford, James Adomian, Nick Kroll, Andy Daly, and others, as host and characters. The show was described by Entertainment Weekly as "often strange, consistently funny, and always unpredictable." It was named one of 2010's "Best Podcasts" by the club. Comedy Bang! was renamed by Aukerman in May 2011.

Comedy Bang, an IFC-produced television show on June 8, 2012. Bang! is a comedy hosted by Aukerman. After five seasons and 110 episodes on December 2, 2016, the series came to an end.

Aukerman founded Comedy Bang Bang Bang World, a subscription service that includes access to the podcast's full archives, the live shows, archives, and other sites, such as Threedom and The Andy Daly Podcast Project, as well as exclusive podcasts such as CBB Presents and Scott Hasn't Seen. An episode with President Barack Obama was announced in March 2014. It was supposed to be emphasized in the Affordable Care Act. Throughout the interview, Galifianakis performed in his familiar insult comedy style of interviewing, which the President acknowledged throughout. The video of this interview had been watched for upwards of 14 million viewers in less than 24 hours. This episode was directed and produced by Aukerman, who received the 2014 Emmy Award for Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program.

Each episode has been watched millions of times, and President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Justin Bieber, Brad Pitt, and Natalie Portman's segments have become some of Funny Or Die's most popular videos ever.

Aukerman received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program again in 2015, this time for the Brad Pitt episode.

Based on the success of his podcast, Aukerman and Jeff Ullrich founded the Earwolf network in 2010, producing and publishing many podcasts. They revealed a collaboration with Funny Or Die in 2011. They launched Wolfpop, under comedian Paul Scheer's curation in 2014. The bulk of Wolfpop's services were incorporated into Earwolf on March 7, 2016.

Aukerman founded U Talkin' U2 To Me? in 2014, ostensibly dedicated to the band's career and discography. The majority of episodes combined discussion of the band with running gags and comedic bits that are only marginally related to the band. Aukerman and Scott were eventually interviewed by the podcast, as well as being able to see them live. Following a look at Songs of Experience in 2017, the podcast came to a close.
