Philip Rosenthal Career

Biography and career

Rosenthal's parents were both born in Germany; after being interned in France, his mother went to Cuba after World War II, then to Manhattan, where she met her husband. Rosenthal was born in Queens, New York, but the majority of his childhood was spent in New City, New York, located in Rockland County. He attended Clarkstown North High School, where he was very active in the school's drama club, Cue 'N Curtain, and theatre. In 1977, Rosenthal graduated from Clarkstown North. He went to Hofstra University after high school, where he graduated in 1981.

Rosenthal was an actor in New York City in the early 1980s before shifting to film work, becoming a writer and producer of such shows as Coach with Craig T. Nelson and the short-lived Baby Talk.

Everybody Loves Raymond was Rosenthal's most commercial success and longest-running venture. Ray Romano co-produced the show, which was based in part on Romano's comedian scripts. Amy MacDougall-Barone, Rosenthal's wife, portrayed the off-and-on girlfriend (wife after season 7) of Robert Barone (Brad Garrett) in the series. Rosenthal and Romano were the two leads who decided to pull the series due to the other cast members' objections or reservations. Rosenthal wrote or co-wrote twenty-one episodes of the series.

Rosenthal has occasionally performed well in films such as James L. Brooks' Spanglish, The Simpsons Movie (a big screen adaptation of the long-running TV series), Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, and Jake Kasdan's feature, The TV Set.

Rosenthal is the author of the book You're Lucky You're Funny: How Life Becames a Sitcom, which was released on October 21, 2006. He discusses how his life inspired Raymond's success.

In a White House Correspondents' Dinner video, Rosenthal directed President Bill Clinton, which was seen with soaring applause at the April 2000 event. Rosenthal co-wrote America: A Tribute to Heroes, which aired on all four networks, and received a Peabody Award and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing. Despite being unaware of Russian culture, Rosenthal wrote and directed Exporting Raymond, a Sony Pictures documentary film that depicts his attempts to reimagine Everybody Loves Raymond for Russian television.

In August 2015, as one of 98 members of the Los Angeles Jewish community, he signed an open letter supporting Iran's upcoming nuclear agreement with six world powers led by the US "in the best interest of the United States and Israel."

PBS launched I'll Have What Phil's Enjoying, a six-episode television series in which Rosenthal goes to different countries to investigate their food culture around the world from September 28, 2015. The series was not renewed after six episodes. Any Feed Phil, Netflix's reworked version of the show premiered on January 12, 2018.
