Steve Kloves Career

Life and career

Kloves, a native of Austin, Texas, grew up in Sunnyvale, California, where he graduated from Fremont High School. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, but he dropped out early because he was not accepted into the film program in his third year. He attracted a lot of interest for a screenplay he wrote entitled Swings as an unpaid intern for a Hollywood agent. This culminated in a meeting where he successfully pitched Racing with the Moon (1984).

His first experience with professional screenwriting left him wanting more interaction with the actors so that the stories would remain true to his imagination. Kloves wrote The Fabulous Baker Boys and also planned it to be his debut directorial debut. The film was finally released in 1989 after years of attempting to market the venture in Hollywood. The Fabulous Baker Boys did well and was critically acclaimed, but his next attempt as writer/director for Flesh and Bone in 1993 fared poorly at the box office. Kloves then stopped writing for three years.

He began converting Michael Chabon's novel Wonder Boys into a screenplay, realizing that he had to return to writing to help his family. Kloves was given the opportunity to lead but he declined, preferring to direct only his own creations. This was his first attempt at adapting another work to film. Since the film's debut in 2000, his screenplay was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.

Kloves received a list of books that the company was considering adapting as films from Warner Bros. Despite his usual indifference to these catalogs, the first Harry Potter book on sale intrigued him. He went on to write the screenplays for the first four films in the series. However, he decided against writing the fifth film, saying that "the fourth film, Goblet of Fire, was really difficult to do." For two years, I wrote about it. But it's not that simple, and I don't think I'll ever fully understand why I didn't do it." Kloves returned to write the sixth, seventh, and eighth installments after Michael Goldenberg wrote the screenplay for the fifth film.

Kloves was hired to work on a film version of Mark Haddon's book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in 2011.

Kloves has been making the Fantastic Beasts films, a spinoff prequel to the main Harry Potter series. J.K. Rowling co-wrote the third installment of Kloves.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, Andy Serkis-directed film. Callie's daughter was the screenplay.
