Blackwell began writing television comedy in 1999 after graduating from Churchill College, Cambridge as a mature student and then as a sub-editor for magazines. The Kumars were No. 61. Alastair McGowan's Big Impression and The Armstrong and Miller Exhibition, in which he created the pair's street-talking RAF pilots, 42. He first appeared on Armando Iannucci's topical Channel 4 show Gash in 2003. He went on to write on all four series of Iannucci's political sitcom The Thick of It, as well as co-wrote In The Loop, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

2004: The Stupid Version and Time Trumpet are two of Iannucci's other projects.

Blackwell co-wrote the pilot episode and served as writer and executive producer on the subsequent four seasons, earning two Primetime Emmy Awards.

Blackwell co-starred in Chris Morris' 2010 black comedy film Four Lions, as well as Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain. He had worked with them on the Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show and BBC One's The Old Guys before.

David Mitchell and Robert Webb appeared in the sitcom Back in 2016. It premiered on Channel 4 on September 6, 2017.

Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard appear in the dramedy Breeders film from Blackwell in 2020. The series premiered on the American cable television network FX on March 2nd, 2020, and on Sky One on March 12, 2020.

Stephanie Davies, an investigator who worked with Cheshire police under the coroner's watchdog, authored a 179-page paper stating that there were significant similarities in the lives of couples in North West England between 1996 and 2011. She gave her employers, Cheshire Police, and a list of other experts a copy of her study, before being banned by the police. Miss Davies suspected at least two cases to be the work of a serial offenders because of their similarities in her book describing inconsistencies in the initial police investigations, which led to widespread mistrust.
