Early life and education
Diane was born in Nevada City, California, on April 20, 1983. She grew up performing with her musician parents and in the school choir. She learned to play guitar and started writing songs that blend tense, trance-like arpeggios with warm vocals and contemplative lyrics about family and nature. Forest Parade was her first recordings, which were self-released in 2003. Joanna Newsom, a Nevada City native, made her first public appearances. She spent time with the Nevada City band Black Bear before moving on to her solo ventures.

Diane married Tom Bevitori in 2011. In August 2013, they divorced and she married Toren Volkmann. Vera Marie (born October 2013) and Oona (born February 2017) have two children.
Career
On a trip to Europe, the Pirate's Gospel was written. They were first discovered in her father's studio and were initially self-released in 2004 in paper and lace sleeves with hand lettering. Holocene Music pressed the album out in a new version in October 2006, gaining widespread critical attention.
On a compilation of Nevada City artists, a new song, "Dry Grass and Shadows," was released in the United Kingdom, and five more new songs, Songs Whistled Through White Teeth, was released in the United Kingdom in October 2006. In April 2007, the Pirate's Gospel was published on Names Records in the United Kingdom, receiving rave reviews in The Times and NME.
She traveled the United States solo and with Tom Brosseau, and opened for Iron & Wine, Akron/Family, the Decemberists, and Vashti Bunyan. In the spring of 2008, she toured extensively in Europe (UK, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany).
The Silence of Love, a collection of cover songs released by Eddie Bezalel and Hugo Nicholson, as well as musicians Josh Klinghoffer, Joey Waronker, Gus Seyffert, Leo Abrahams, and Woody Jackson under the name Headless Heroes.

Wild Divine toured the United States and Europe to promote the album, and in July 2011, they opened for the Fleet Foxes on a number of dates. She appeared alongside Fleet Foxes in Europe in the fall of the same year.
