Angel Olsen (born January 22, 1987) is an American singer-songwriter and singer who lives in Asheville, North Carolina.

Early life and education

Angel Olsen was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 22, 1987. Olsen was adopted by a foster family who had cared for her since she was three years old. An image of the years she and her parents gave off an impression. "Because there are so many decades of time between us, I became more interested in what their childhood was like," she describes her parents, both of whom died in 2021. "I fantasized about being young in the 1930s and 1950s, more so than other children my age." "My mother only has this capacity for children," Olsen said.

Despite early childhood aspirations to be a "pop star," her passions changed in high school. Olsen became more introverted, regularly attending punk rock and noise music performances at the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center and the Creep Crawl, as well as Christian rock concerts around the region. She began playing piano and guitar as well as writing her own songs. "A meeting of early No Doubt and punk rock" at the age of 16, she formed Good Fight, a local band. Olsen moved to Chicago two years after graduating from Tower Grove Christian High School.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy, who invited her to tour as his backing vocalist, was befriended by her.

Personal life

Olsen came out as gay on April 16, 2021. Olsen's 2022, she revealed that her friendship with partner Adele Thibodeaux had ended, and that she had been friends and musician Meg Duffy for a few months. She lives in Asheville, North Carolina.

Olsen's debut EP, Strange Cacti, was released in 2011, and her debut studio album, Half Way Home, was released in 2012. Olsen has collaborated with a number of other influential figures of American indie rock, including Tim Kinsella of Cap'n Jazz, LeRoy Bach of Wilco, and Cass McCombs in addition to her work with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and the Cairo Gang. Leroy Bach's Songs of Marvin Tate Featuring Angel Olsen was released on December 3, 2013, as well as with Chicago poet Marvin Tate.

Olsen signed with Jagjaw before releasing Burn Your Fire for No Witness, her first full-band album, on February 17, 2014. In the last episode of Netflix's original series 13 Reasons Why in 2017, the closing track of the album, "Windows," was included.

My Woman, Olsen's third studio album, was released on September 2, 2016. Critic Ciara Dolan characterized the album as a "starting record of unimpeachable power and honesty," while Pitchfork's Jenn Pelly described it as "her best record to date."

All Mirrors, Olsen's fourth studio album, was released on October 4, 2019, to critical acclaim. Laura Snapes of Pitchfork described the album as "breathtaking" and a "strong wind" that blows in and "leaves you undone," while Alexis Petridis of The Guardian described it as "challenging and fascinating," and Happy Mag's Luke Saunders called it a "transcendence" in comparison to her previous releases.

Mark Ronson's album "Late Night Feelings" featured Olsen, as well as Miley Cyrus and Camila Cabello.

Olsen's fifth studio album - Whole New Mess - was released in 2020 by Jagjawar on August 28, 2020. All Mirrors tracks are arranged in a more personal manner on the album.

Olsen released a special edition boxset titled 'Songs of the Lark and Other Far Memories,' that includes her previous two albums All Mirrors and Whole New Mess, as well as demos, re-workings, remixes, and covers to complete this chapter in her career, which was released via Jagjaw. It was announced on May 7, 2021, with the lead single 'It's Every Season [Whole New Mess]". Olsen also launched several remixes of famous launches in 2020. Olsen worked on a cover of "Mr. Lonely," directed by Bobby Vinton, directed by Miranda July's film Kajillionaire. Olsen collaborated with film composer Emile Mosseri on the cover, which was also included in the film. Olsen's "Like I Used To" was a single with Sharon Van Etten, which was produced by John Congleton on May 20, 2021. In a music video, Olsen and Van Etten's hairstyled in similar shag haircuts.

Big Time, Olsen's sixth studio album, was released on June 3, 2022. The album was preceded by lead single "All the Good Times" and a second single, "Big Time," which was followed by the album's title track.
