Synger Kjente Barnesanger, a children's album, was released under the band name "Marit & Marion." When the album was first nominated for a Spellemannprisen award, they were both 12 years old. The band name was changed to M2M later on. In 1998, Atlantic records announced that they had agreed to a worldwide deal. Both the band and company's debut single, Don't Say You Love Me, was both a critical and commercial success. Shades of Purple was the singer's debut album.
