Sawyer Fredericks Career

Career

Fredericks released Breaking Ice, a collection of six original songs, in 2012. Out My Window, his first studio album made up of 15 original songs, was released on June 4, 2013.

Fredericks appeared on The Voice from February to May 2015. After seeing YouTube videos of his singing, talent scouts from the show invited him to participate in pre-show auditions. On his televised blind audition, he sang "I'm a Man of Constant Sorrow," a traditional folk song that he had earlier learned to do while busking. Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, and Christina Aguilera all turned their chairs around within ten seconds, and Blake Shelton joined them 40 seconds later. Fredericks selected Williams as his coach.

Fredericks performed "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" in his Battle round with Noelle Bybee, and Williams was chosen by Williams to advance. Fredericks competed in a three-way match with Mia Z. and Paul Pfau after Anthony Riley was barred from the competition in the Knockout round. Fredericks was rewarded by his appearance on Howie Day's "Collide" (along with Mia Z.) An climb into the Top 20.

Fredericks also made it to the Top 12 in the Playoff rounds, where they featured Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble" and John Lennon's "Imagine" and climbed to the Top 10 in the playoff rounds. Falsetto's words in the latter put the former slave king of Fredericks into question, but his voice was shifting. With "Imagine," he earned his first iTunes Top ten multiplier bonus of the season, winning second position by the time of the voting window. He progressed to the top eight with Goo Dolls' "Iris" (reaching his fourth position on iTunes, edged out by Koryn Hawthorne at third), and to the Top Six with Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" (reaching the second position on iTunes).

Fredericks performed Al Green's "Take Me to the River" (reaching the tenth position on iTunes), bringing an energetic teen dance troupe around the more reserved singer. Fredericks was allowed to pick a song that hadn't been released by a major label, May Erlewine's "Shine On" for his Mother's Day dedication song. Erlewine revealed that although giving permission for the use of the song, she was also a strong supporter of Joshua Davis, the upcoming The Voice competitor. This week, "Shine On" soared to third place on iTunes, and it was the highest rated song on The Voice. He returned to New York for a homecoming visit, appearing in a parade and appearance of three songs before over 4,000 people at Fonda Speedway (Fultonville, New York), as well as an evening performance at the Palace Theatre.

Fredericks' coverage of Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years" and Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" earned him the highest ratings of the week, placing him in second and third positions on iTunes, respectively.

Fredericks released "Please" (an original song written by Ray LaMontagne) and a accompanying music video on May 18, 2015, the show's finale. Fredericks and Williams performed "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Crofts for his duet pick. Fredericks' interpretation of Neil Young's "Old Man" brought the show to an end. "Summer Breeze" had risen to the nineteenth position on iTunes, "Old Man" was third, and "Please" was the second.

Fredericks appeared on the stage with John Fogerty in a medley of Creedence Clearwater Revival hits on May 19, 2015 — "Born on the Bayou," "Bad Moon Rising" and "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" are among the highlights from a medley of Creedence Clearwater Revival hits. The show was interrupted by apparent audio difficulties. At the end of the show, Fredericks was proclaimed the winner, with Meghan Linsey second, Joshua Davis third, and Koryn Hawthorne fourth. Winning contestants are paid $100,000 and a Recording deal with Republic Records.

Fredericks also broke many series sales figures for The Voice, with ten singles debuting in the iTunes top ten and 14 singles charting in the top 200 this week, according to Republic. During the display, nearly one million digital singles were sold. Fredericks maintained a strong social media presence throughout the campaign, with leading numbers of followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Fredericks was the youngest person to win The Voice at age 16, but before that, the youngest winner had been Danielle Bradbery in Season Four. His record will be surpassed by Brynn Cartelli, who won Season 14 at the age of 15.

The studio version of the performance ranked in the top ten on iTunes.
