Aleksandar Srnec Life

Aleksandar Srnec, born in 1924 and died on March 27, 2010 in Croatia, was a Croatian artist. * He is best known for his avant-garde creations and kinetic and lumino kinetic art. Srnec was one of the founders of the Exat 51 party, which included architects Vjenceslav Richter, Bernardo Bernardi, Zdravko Bregovac, Boidar Raica, and Vladimir Zaharovic, as well as painters Vlado Kristl and Ivan Picelj. * He created abstract art based on the use of geometric shapes. In 1953, he created Space Modulator, his first kinetic objects, while in 1956, he began his experiments with moving sculptures and reliefs. He began working with luminal-kinetic experiments, including Luminoplastic I, in 1962, and from 1968, he began making "ambience art." * His work, Luminoplastic Ambience, was first luminal-kinetic object/ambience in Croatian art, and was on display in Gallery SC (Student Centre Gallery) in Zagreb, 1967. * He worked with the Zagreb School of Animated Films and designed sets for three puppet films. * He produced A Man and His Shadow together with Dragutin Vunak in the 1970s and 1980s. * He also began working with light. * He appeared at many shows in Croatia and abroad: Zagreb (1953, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1980, 1983, 1992) and Mannheim (1971) are among his notable exhibits. Present Absence was held in two cities: at the Gallery of Old and Contemporary Masters in Varaddin, (2008), and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, (2010). * He has received several awards, including the Vladimir Nazor Award for life achievement (1999) and the Croatian Association of Artists Life Achievement Award (2008).
