Ivan Picelj Life

* Ivan Picelj (28 July 1924-to-date) was a contemporary Croatian painter, sculptor, and graphic designer. Picelj created a specific kind of geometric abstraction in Croatian painting by using primary colours and simplifying the shapes to geometric elements. * Since 1957, he made sculptures and reliefs in wood and in metal. * One of his trademark steps is the multiplication of the basic plastic unit within a grid. He was one of the founders and members of EXAT 51, which included architects Vjenceslav Richter, Bernardo Bernardi, Zdravko Bregovac, Body Ra & Vladimir Zaharovic, and painters Vlado Kristl and Aleksandar Srnec, as well as painters Alberto Zaharovic and Vladimir Zaharovic. * He was also a member of SIO (1956). He is one of the founders of the New Tendencies movement, and he was instrumental in the creation and display of the New Tendencies exhibitions in Zagreb (1961-67). He spent a lot of time in Paris, where he worked with the Denise René Gallery. * He also participated in graphic design (posters and books) from the mid-1960s and released four graphic maps: 8 serigraphs (1966), Cyclophoria (1971), and Géométrie élémentaire (1973). * He curated the first industrial design exhibition in Zagreb in 1955 and was involved in the creation of the Yugoslav pavilions for national and international exhibitions. He has appeared in many solo (since 1952) and group shows, including the Venice Biennale (1969, 1972), Constructivism and Kinetic Art in Middle and Eastern Europe (Bonn, 1995), Ivan Picelj, Denise René Gallery (Ljubljana, 2008), Rive Gauche, Paris. * His works are included in the museum exhibits at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb, the Muzeum Sztuki in Ljubljana, the Museum of Modern Art, New York. * Many works from many private collections, including the Filip Trade Collection in Croatia, are also available.
