Vjekoslav Karas Life

Vjekoslav Karas (19 May 1821 - 5 July 1858), a Croatian painter who was considered a pioneer of a new period of Croatian painting and art in general, was born in May 1821. Born in Karlovac, Croatia, Karas was educated in Italy.

He mainly painted biblical and religious themes, but portraits were his most well-known.

He also played flute and guitar in addition to painting.

Karas returned to Croatia in 1848 and studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Zagreb.

By then, he was suffering from depression and attempted suicide, and after that he spent some time under bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer's care, he was living under the watch of a monsip Juraj Strossmayer's tutelage.

Karas drowned in the Korana river in his native Karlovac in 1858, despite being depressed and living in poverty.

Life

Born in Karlovac, Croatia, in 1838, Karas was sent to be educated in Italy. When visiting Rome, he took inspiration from biblical and religious traditions, including painting Mother with Moses on the river bank. He discovered a passion for music and learned to play the flute and the guitar while composing songs in both Italian and Croatian. Until returning to Karlovac in 1848, he began focusing on portraits, painting Roman women playing a lute and Roman commoner. After his return, he continued painting portraits and started painting local country life and local folk. He went to Zagreb and began teaching. He traveled from 1851-18522 to Bosnia, where he painted a portrait of Ottoman field marshal and governor Omer-pa Latas and his daughter.

Karas suffered with depression on a regular basis and had even attempted suicide. In Akovo, he briefly worked with bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, but he was fired soon after his suicide attempt. Karas drowned in the Korana river in his hometown Karlovac, despite suffering from depression and living in poverty.
