Albert Kivikas Life

Albert Kivikas (18 January] [O.S.] 1898 in Groß-St.

Johannis, Livonia, Russian Empire, 19 May 1978 in Lund, Estonia, was an Estonian writer and journalist.

He is best known as the author of the book Names in Marble (Estonian: "Nimed marmortahvlil"), the subject of which is the Estonian War of Independence.

Life

Albert Kivikas was born in Suure-Jaani, which at the time was part of the Russian Empire. Anu Kivikas, his mother, was a weaver. A. Pedajas and Mart Karus used to publish some of his drawings in his youth. Kivikas became one of Estonia's few writers to experiment with futurism following the Estonian War of Independence, in which he served as a volunteer. Similarly, his best books and short stories about war and social injustice in the rural environment are among his best works.

He served as a chairman of the Estonian Writers' Union from 1941 to 1944. In spring 1944, Kivikas went into exile in Finland and moved from there in autumn 1944 to Sweden, where he remained until the end of his life.
