Early life

Ajith Kumar was born in Hyderabad, India, on May 1, 1971. P. Subramaniam's father, who is from Palakkad, Kerala, is a poet, and Mohini, a Kolkata, West Bengal mother, is from Sindhi. Ajith was the middle brother of three brothers, the others being Anup Kumar, an investor, and Anil Kumar, an IIT Madras graduate-turned-entrepreneur.

Ajith dropped out of Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School in his tenth grade before completing his higher secondary education. Ajith gained a job as an apprentice after a family friend who worked with the Enfield company, and spent six months learning to be a mechanic. He left the position at the behest of his father, who wanted Ajith to have a white-collar job, and joined another family friend's clothing exporting business as an apprentice. He later went on to become a business developer and travelled extensively around the country on sales assignments, improving his English-speaking skills. After resigning from his position, Ajith formed a textiles company selling fabric with three other associates. Since the company's downturn, Ajith was forced to work in a different field. Ajith Kumar Career

Acting career

In En Veedu En Kanavar (1990), Ajith began his acting career as a school student. He was cast in his first lead role in the Telugu romantic drama Prema Pusthakam (1993), which remains his only Telugu film to date, according to S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, whose son was a classmate of Ajith. However, the film's director Gollapudi Srinivas's death was soon after production began, and production was suspended shortly afterward. As a result, Ajith's first major theatrical release was the Tamil romantic drama Amaravathi (1993), which Ajith had signed after being recommended by Balasubrahmanyam, who had attended scenes of Prema Pusthakam prior to its postponement. Ajith was bedridden as the film went into post-production due to a racing injury while training for an amateur motor race. He underwent three major surgeries, resulting in bedrest for a year and a half. As a result, actor Vikram's voice in the film was dubbed. Ajith recovered after the accident and went on to play supporting roles. In the years that followed, he appeared in Paasamal (1994) and Vijay-starrer Rajavin Parvaiyile (1995). He was also seen in the family drama Pavithra (1994), in which he was depicted as an ailing patient with maternal love from Raadhika.

Aasai (1995), Ajith's first commercially successful film as a lead actor. Vasanth's film, as well as Mani Ratnam's, featured him in the lead role opposite Suvalakshmi, whose brother-in-law infatuations about her. The film did well at the box office and established Ajith as a rising star in Tamil cinema. He appeared in Kalloori Vaino later, co-starring Prashanth and Pooja Bhatt. In which Ajith reunited with Agathiyan, the producer of the earlier project Vainmathi, was the subject of Ajith's second wildly popular film. Kadhal Kottai was paired opposite Devayani in the film, with Heera Rajgopal playing a supporting role.

Ajith appeared in five films in 1997, but no of the projects were doing well commercially. He had joined film distribution and had suffered as a result. Ajith also suffered with chronic back pains, and several of his other film commitments had been postponed, thus decribing the time as a "cruel time." Amitabh Bachchan's Tamil film Ullaasam (1997), in which he was paid a high salary of 2 million (equivalent to 9.3 million or US$120,000) for the first time in 2020, was a notable project among the five films.

Ajith completed another big, profitable venture in Saran's Kaadhal Mannan, an action romantic comedy, in 1998, laying the groundwork for a growing fan base. He appeared in Vasanth's Nerukku Ner before being replaced by Suriya. The following films Aval Varuvala and Unnidai Koduthen were also well-received, with Ajith playing in a guest role alongside Karthik. Except for Uyirodu Uyiraga's, which had a poor showing, his other three films, which were released in 1998, were box office hits.

The romantic drama of Ramesh Khanna and Sundar C's Unnaithedi opposite Malavika set the tone for a sequence of major triumphs. Valiant Valiant, a thriller starring Ajith in two roles for the first time against Simran, became one of his biggest hits during that period. With Ajith's portrayal of the two brothers winning their first of many awards for Filmfare's Best Actor, the film told the story of a deaf and mute brother setting his sights on his younger brother's wife. In addition, Ajith's portrayal of the brothers was praised by critics, who said that the film was a "instant classic," with Ajith announcing that he is a "talented actor." Anandha Poongatre and Nee Varuvay Ena's two leading roles also received accolades for their roles. Amarkalam was Saran's last film before the new millennium, starring Shalini and featuring Shalini, who married shortly after the film was released. Amarkalam told the tale of a teenage boy who grew up and died without showing signs of love or affection, eventually becoming a criminal in the process, with critics appreciating Ajith's portrayal of his rogue character.

Mugavaree's successor, Mugavaree, has received a lot of attention and acclaim. The film revolved around a struggling music composer whose life is marred by sacrifices in his career. Two endings were present in the film, one with Ajith's flourishing in his career and the other with Ajith's dejected. Ajith's appearance was also lauded by Rediff commentators, who said that "Ajith is the true winner" in the film's script, drawing an allusion to the film's script, but not adding, "it's amazing to see how Ajith has grown as an actor." He depicts the fright and sad Sridhar "serifully." He appeared in A. R. Rahman's 2000 musical Kandukondain, directed by Rajiv Menon. Ajith appeared in the film alongside notable actor Mammooty and actresses Aishwarya Rai, Tabu, and Srividya. Ajith played a struggling film director with Tabu in a similar vein to his previous film, with the pair being praised unanimously for their roles. After giving six straight hits in 1999 and starring Simran in Mugavaree and Kandukondain in 2000, Ajith failed in Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven, an unsuccessful film.

Ajith appeared in three commercially lucrative Tamil films in 2001. Laila and Suresh Gopi, a co-star in Laila, were released at Pongal and launched at a new image of Ajith as an action hero with a popular message among the masses. From this film, he obtained the name "Thala" (Leader). He had been offered a role in Nandha but he turned down and was replaced by Suriya, the eldest son of actor Sivakumar, in the same year. Citizen, the much-anticipated thriller, was starring him in ten different get-ups and was a commercial success at the box office. A role in the family drama Poovellam Un Vasam was opposite Jyothika and was a huge success both professionally and critically, winning a Special Best Actor Award from the Tamil Nadu State. The year came to an end with Ajith's Hindi film Asoka, in which Ajith appeared as one of the antagonists against Shah Rukh Khan, which did not do well. Ajith appeared in three films in 2002, the first two, Red and Raja, being box office disappointments, but the former actor was still promoting his image as an action hero. Ajith was portrayed in two films in Villain, one as a mentally impaired person and another as a caring brother. The film was a hit and earned him his second Best Tamil Actor Award from Filmfare.

Ajith appeared in fewer films from 2003 to 2005, owing to his work in motor racing's emergence. Ennai Thalatta Varuvala's long-awaited Ennai Thalatta Varuvala and the police drama Anjaneya were both failing commercially in 2003. Three of the actor's best films, namely Saamy, Kaakha, and Ghajini, were turned down by the actor due to various reasons.

Jana with Sneha's film debut became a huge failure, with Attagasam, Saran's only hit in the period. Ajith appeared in multiple roles in the film, with a song called "Thala Deepavali" penned to advertise his action image. Despite receiving positive feedback and opening with a strong opening, Ajith went from acting to re-working his image in 2005. Attagasam was his only box office success of the five films released between 2003 and 2005.

Ajith recovered from hiatus by appearing in P. Vasu's Paramasivan, for which he had lost 20 kilograms to play the lead role. The film had moderate success, scoring over Vijay's Aathi, which was also released in the same week at the box office, at the box office. Following the major weight loss, critics from The Hindu said that Ajith looked "trim and taut" in the film, with "merely his eyes causing the film to have lost some of its sparkle." In addition, Ajith sported long hair for Paramasivan and his two other projects in 2006, which Ajith eventually dropped out of. In the same manner, AVM Productions' Thirupathi, Perarasu's film, did well at the box office, despite receiving poor feedback, but Ajith "salvages the situation with a spirited appearance." Ajith summed up a fruitful return by the unveiling of his long-awaited film Varalaru, which went on to become his first biggest success. Ajith was featured in three roles, including one as a classical dancer, in the K. S. Ravikumar film co-starring Asin, with his portrayals lauded. In addition, the film received his third Best Actor Award from Ajith. According to media reports, Shankar would carry out a project together. Ajith's first film, Amalwar, became a failure at the box office, with his latest film still running in theaters even after Aalwar's brief theatrical run ended. Kireedam, a reimagining of the 1989 National Award-winning Malayalam film of the same name, received largely critical feedback, with the film also showing moderate success. Ajith sustained a new spinal injury during the filming, a repeat of his illness earlier in his career.

Ajith appeared in Billa, a remake of the 1980 Rajinikanth actor of the same name. The Vishnuvardhan's artistic direction and cinematography in India earned critical praise for Ajith, becoming a trend-setter in sleek art direction and cinematography. Billa featured Ajith in two roles, one of a notorious don't, and the other played an innocent person who had to act as the don following the former's death. Ajith appeared in the film Ayngaran International's Aegan, directed by choreographer Raju Sundaram, after Billa. The film, which was a remake of the 2004 Hindi comedy Main Hoon Na, received mixed feedback and was a failure at the box office.

Following a year of production, Ajith's Aasal, released in February 2010, held a grand opening at the box office. Despite higher hopes, the film, which also starred Ajith in two roles, did not succeed at the box office.

Ajith received a film directed by Venkat Prabhu titled Mankatha, which was notably his 50th project after his second foray into motor racing. Vinayak Mahadevan, a serving police officer with a lust for money, was the film's full length negative role. Critics lauded his work and his decision to portray a person in Tamil cinema as a "out and out Ajith film" that only worked "mainly because of Ajith." The actor's appearance was lauded, and he "rocks as the man with ice in his veins as the cruel and diabolic cop" and that he performed "the emotionless bad man, to perfection," according to the former actor, who admitted that "he carried the whole film on his capable shoulders." Mankatha became a financially successful venture.

Ajith appeared in Billa II, a sequel to his 2007 film Billa, which was released on July 13, 2012. Reviewers lauded Ajith's on-screen presence and stunts, but critics blamed him for the story's and the director's choice. The film eventually failed at the box office, and it was a shame to leave. He appeared in Vishnuvardhan's Arrambam, alongside Arya, Nayantara, and Taapsee Pannu, which was published on October 31 and received rave reviews from both critics and audience alike. After Arrambam, Siva's film directing Tamannaah, which was also received rave feedback from critics, he's planning on another film after Arrambam. Yennai Arindhaal was Ajith's next film, with Gautham Vasudev Menon as director. Ajith's appearance as a cop was widely lauded by a critic who dubbed it "Ajith's best since Kandukondain Kandukondain." In the 63rd Filmfare Awards South, Ajith was subsequently nominated for the Best Actor – Tamil award. In Vedalam (2015), Ajith worked with Siva again, in which critics lauded his performance. Vivegam's most recent venture, he received mixed to critical reviews, with critics quoting illogical scenes and average screenplay. Viswasam, his next film release, was announced on the Pongal festival of 2019. Ajith appeared in Nerkonda Paarvai, a Hindi film that was based on the Hindi film Pink (2016), and was released in the same year.

Valimai, Ajith's upcoming film, was released on February 2022 with mixed news and grossed more than 200,000 crore at the international box-office.

Racing career

In circuits around India, such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Delhi, Ajith became a racing driver. He is one of the few Indians to compete in Formula 1 and 2. He has competed in other international championships, including Germany and Malaysia. In the 2003 Formula Asia BMW Championships, he competed. Armaan Ebrahim and Parthiva Sureshwaren were among three Indians competing in the 2010 Formula 2 Championship.

Ajith signed a one-off race during the Formula Maruti Indian Championships in 2002, where he finished fourth place, announcing his participation in the inaugural Formula BMW Asia championship. Despite being spun out in the first lap of his first run, Ajith finished the season by placing twelfth.

Ajith, who has been on sabbatical for six years, has signed up for his third season of motor racing by being active in the FIA Formula Two Championship in 2010. After Ajith's film directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon was postponed, allowing him to participate in the entire season, it was decided to participate in the sport. He competed in the final round of the MRF racing series in Chennai in February 2010, but he was unable to complete the event due to mechanical issues prior to signing up. More trials in Sepang, Malaysia, followed suit as he prepared for the season's in his Formula Renault V6 vehicle with Eurasian Racing, losing 11 kilograms during preparation.
