Adil Ray (born 26 April 1974) is a British actor, comedian, and television and television presenter.
In addition to presenting on various BBC radio stations, Ray appeared in BBC One's Citizen Khan, which he created and co-writes.
Early life
Ray was born in Birmingham, England, to a Pakistani Muslim father from Lahore and a Kenyan mother. He was picked up in Yardley, Surrey's suburb. Abdul was Ray's father, who worked as a bus driver for almost 40 years. His mother worked in the Immigration Appeals Department in the Civil Service and was of Buganda and Kenyan Asian descent. During Ray's youth, his parents divorced.
Ray attended Handsworth Grammar School and Junior School in Yardley, his first day being the day after the Handsworth Riots in 1985. Ray was an avid cricketer and played for Birmingham and District Premier League team West Bromwich Dartmouth in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ray obtained a 2:1 Bachelor's Degree in Marketing from the University of Huddersfield in 1997.

Career
While attending the University of Huddersfield and DJing at the university venue Eden (1992), Ray began his career as a radio presenter on a pirate radio station in Huddersfield. Later in his placement year, he began working with a new little Asian radio station in Birmingham, where he spent the first half of the year before moving to Choice FM (1995). Ray obtained a job with Galaxy 105 in 1997, making him the first full-time South Asian presenter to host a mainstream commercial radio show in the United Kingdom. He later worked with Century Radio in Manchester, Radio Aire Leeds, and the Ministry of Sound Radio.
Ray first appeared on the BBC Asian Network in 2002 to host the late night Adil Ray Show. Ray was the first to interview and champion R&B actor Jay Sean in 2003. Ray took over the drive time afternoon slot in May 2006, and from January 2009, he hosted the station's Breakfast Show starting at 7:00 a weekday. At the UK Asian Music Awards in 2008, Adil Ray Show won the best radio show category. On June 4, 2010, Ray left the BBC Asian Network to pursue other radio and television work.
Ray has been a regular on BBC Radio 5 Live, presenting the Football and Cricket 606 phone numbers, Victoria Derbyshire, Weekend Breakfast and Fighting Talk. In addition to this, Ray has appeared in documentaries for BBC Radio 4, including Picturing Britain and Towering Ambition. He has also appeared on the award-winning BBC Asian Network radio soap, Silver Street.
On BBC Two, he also hosted Desi DNA, a British Asian arts and lifestyle show, and hosted Tales From Europe, where he delves into Madrid's 24-hour lifestyle. Ray appeared on Is It Cos I Is Black, an award-nominated program at the Royal Television Society in 2007. He investigated the issue of political correctness for BBC Three. In addition, he filmed an Explore documentary for BBC Two, in which he reported from Argentina and Turkey. Mr Khan, the self-appointed "community king" on BBC Two, and Birmingham "Muslim DJ" MC Raa appeared in 2010.
Mr. Khan appeared in his own web series for BBC Comedy in 2010 to cover the UK general election. Mr. Khan returned later this year with a BBC Comeback web series about the cricket to coincide with the Pakistan national team's visit to England earlier this year.
Ray joined BBC Radio 5 Live in the summer of 2010 as part of their cricket coverage, heading to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to cover the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He can often be seen hosting the 5 Live late-night show. Ray continues to produce documentaries for BBC Radio 4, including the latest 'The Real Mr. Khan,' a documentary that examines the role of community leaders. In a BBC Radio 4 documentary titled The Sex Lives of British Pakistanis, Ray also addressed the issue of sex and grooming in the British Pakistani community.

The Asian Muslim sitcom follows the trials and tribulations of big-hearted, loud-mouthed, self-appointed community leader Mr Khan (Adil Ray) and his long-serving family, Mrs Khan (Bolor) and her daughters Shazia (Maya Sondhi) and Alia (Bhavna Limbachia).
Danny Cohen, BBC One Controller, and Cheryl Taylor, Controller of Comedy Commissioning, produced six 30-minute episodes of Citizen Khan, which were commissioned by BBC In-House Comedy.
