Abel Hernandez Career

Club career

Nicknamed La Joya, he started his playing with Uruguayan side Central Espaol, scoring five goals in his first four games. He was subsequently acquired by Pearol, where he appeared in a handful of games and gained a spot in the Under-20 Uruguayan team.

Palermo, an Italian Serie A club, completed the signing of Hernández, where he joined fellow Uruguayan Edinson Cavani on February 2, 2009. Palermo delivered him only a month later due to some health issues regarding a cardiac arrhythmia that resulted in a small surgical intervention. In the final minutes of a 5–2 home win to Lecce, he made his first team debut on March 15th, replacing Edinson Cavani. In June 2009, he lifted the Trofeo Facchetti with the Primavera under 19 team.

Due to injury and his participation in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he missed the first weeks of the 2009-10 Serie A due to sickness and his participation in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Hernández played his first game on October 29, 2009. Cristian Melinte's halftime replacement scored in Internazionale's 5–3 loss.

Palermo suffered relegation in 2012-2013, and Hernández scored just 1 goal in 14 league matches. In the 81st minute of a home match against Udinese, he equalized as a substitute, but Medhi Benatia was the first to score a winner for the visitors two minutes later. He scored 14 times in 28 Serie B games as the Sicilians returned to the top flight, net netting braces in away victories over Padova and Siena, both of which included a penalty kick, in the following seasons.

Hernández joined Hull City in September 2014 for a three-year deal, with the club having the right to a fourth year. He made his debut at the KC Stadium two weeks later and scored the first goal of a 2–2 draw with West Ham United. He won a penalty after being fouled in the area by Eliaquim Mangala and scoring it in an eventual 2–4 loss. During a 2–2 away draw against Arsenal, his team took the lead.

Hull were relegated on May 24th, 2015 after a goalless draw with Manchester United on the final day of the season. In an off-the-ball incident that was not seen by match officials, Hérnandez punched United defender Phil Jones during the match. He was charged with violent conduct by The Football Association two days later and then banned from playing three-match matches.

Hernández scored his first club hat-trick in a game against Charlton Athletic on January 16, 2016, taking his total score to 14 goals for the season to 14. He won January's Football League Championship Player of the Month, with six goals in four matches, and his boss Steve Bruce won the equivalent. Hernández was named Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year at the club's annual awards, which were held on May 3rd.

Hernández missed two goals in the space of two minutes in a FA Cup fourth round match against Fulham in January 2017. Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli saved his first spot kick before Bettinelli brought-down Hernández, who was trying to get back to the bottom of the game. Hernández stepped up once more, but Bettinelli denied him once more.

Hernández sustained a fractured Achilles tendon against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Hernandez will be out for several months. He returned from injury against Millwall on March 6, 2018, scoring in a 2–1 loss. He had eight goals in ten appearances last season.

At the end of the 2017–18 season, Hernández was offered a new deal by Hull. On the 4th of June, Hernández and Hull City announced that he would leave the club before his deal came to an end after struggling to strike a new contract agreement on a new one. He then held talks with Leeds United about a potential transfer.

Hernández's transfer to CSKA Moscow on August 1, 2018 was announced on August 1st, the Russian Premier League team. In his second match in the league, he scored his first goal in Russia on August 11, 2018, converting the penalty kick to draw the game away 1–1. In a 3–0 victory over Arsenal Tula in his next match, he scored again and contributed with an assist. In CSKA's dramatic 3–0 victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League, he served as a second half replacement. Real Madrid's loss was their biggest loss in Europe at home in their history.

He was released from his employment by mutual consent on May 27, 2019, after appearing only 15 times due to injuries.

Since being released from the Russian capital, Hernández was linked to Nottingham Forest, but the Qatar Stars League's Al Ahli SC has opted for Al Ahli SC, hoping that the change would bring him right back to the national team.

Hernández joined Campeonato Brasileiro club Internacional on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal on August 28, 2020.

Hernández was selected for Uruguay's squad at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup the following year. Hernández converted a second-half penalty goal in Uruguay's 8–0 victory in his first appearance in his final group stage match against Tahiti, making him the fourth player in Confederations Cup history to score four goals in one match. For this appearance, he was rated man of the match. Hernández was also in the Uruguayan squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, making substitution appearances in their opener against Costa Rica and a round of 16 matches against Colombia, both losses. He started with one start and two substitute appearances as Uruguay progressed to the quarterfinals at the 2015 Copa América.

Hernández, a regular in his national team squads, had just recovered from injury until the end of the 2017-18 season, but his 2018 World Cup squad was ruled out of him, including Edinson Cavani, Luis Suárez, Cristhian Stuani, and Maxi Gómez.
