Zachary Werenski (born July 19, 1997) is an American professional ice hockey defenseman who plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Werenski was drafted eighth overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Playing career

Werenski competed in the 2009 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Detroit Belle Tire minor ice hockey team. During the 2013–2014 season, he spent time with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. Despite missing time in November due to injury, he came in second second among team defensemen in scoring with seven goals and 20 assists in 47 games.

Werenski had nine goals and 16 assists in his freshman season at the University of Michigan. Werenski was selected both the 2014–15 Big Ten All-Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten First Team after an outstanding rookie season. The London Knights, the OHL, own Werenski's CHL rights. In the 2013 OHL Priority Selectors, he was drafted by them.

Werenski was named as the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year after an outstanding season with the Wolverines and was selected to the All-Big Ten First Team. Werenski was the No. 1. In 36 games, the 1 scoring defenseman was second in the country among blueliners in points with a career-best 11 goals and 25 assists. He was No. 1 in his six power-play goals. Among defensemen, the country has two defensemen in second place. He had 51 blocked shots on the season, making him the 18th defenseman in Michigan to reach ten goals in a single season, and the first since Jacob Trouba scored 12 goals in 2012–2013. He was also selected as an AHCA First Team All-American.

Werenski and Kyle Connor tied for most assists in the Big Ten tournament championship game with three assists during the 2016 Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. Werenski and Connor tied for points in a championship game with four points. He was also selected to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team.

Werenski was drafted 8th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, on June 26, 2015.

Werenski signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets, beginning with the 2016–17 season. He was drafted into an American Hockey League amateur tryout with the Lake Erie Monsters, the Columbus Blue Jackets' AHL affiliate.

On April 1, 2016, he made his professional debut for the Monsters. He scored his first professional goal, against Nathan Lieuwen of the Rochester Americans, who scored overtime on April 9. Werenski helped the Monsters win their first Calder Cup championship in the 2016 season.

Werenski made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets in the season's first game on October 13, 2016 and scored his first NHL point with an assist. Werenski scored his first goal against San Jose Sharks' Martin Jones on October 15, 2016. Werenski was named Rookie of the Month for November 2016. Werenski scored three goals and seven assists in 14 games during the month.

Werenski set the most points scored by a rookie in franchise history on March 10, 2017, beating Rick Nash by 8 points, the previous record holder.

Werenski was hospitalized in Game 3 of the 2017 playoffs against the Pittsburgh Penguins when a puck from Phil Kessel rode up the shaft of his stick and struck him in the chest. He had stitches and a black eye, but he returned to the game in the third period only to have to leave again after his eye was blocked. He was unable to participate in the remainder of the playoffs because of his injuries.

Werenski was voted third in the Calder Memorial Trophy competition, an honor that is given to the best rookie in the league each year. Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs received the award eventually.

Werenski was called to substitute Seth Jones, a fellow defenseman, at the 2018 NHL All-Star Game on January 26, 2018. Werenski tied for most goals by a Blue Jacket defenseman in a season at 16 points. Werenski told the Blue Jackets he had been playing with an undisclosed shoulder injury that had never healed in October. Werenski had shoulder surgery and was expected to miss 5 to 6 months during the spring and fall season.

The Blue Jackets announced Werenski's contract extension on September 9, 2019.

Werenski scored a hat-trick in a 4–1 Blue Jackets victory over the Florida Panthers and former goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky on December 31, 2019. Werenski finished the 2019–20 NHL regular season as the league's top defensemen with 20 goals.

Werenski was barred from the remainder of the 2020–21 season due to a sports hernia on April 9, 2021.

Werenski's contract with the Blue Jackets has now run for six years, $57.5 million, as of July 29, 2021. Werenski was described as "the face of the company" after re-signing with the team.
