Yeray Alvarez Career

Club career

Yeray, who was born in Barakaldo, Basque Country, joined Athletic Bilbao's youth program at Lezama in 2008, aged 13. He appeared in the 2012-13 NextGen Series with the Juvenil A team, and made his debut as a senior with CD Basconia (the farm team) in Tercera División in the following year.

Yeray was promoted to the Reserves of Segunda División B. During the campaign, he had 36 appearances and one goal, as they returned to Segunda División after a 19-year absence.

Yeray played his first professional game against Girona FC on August 24, 2015, starting as a second-half replacement for Jurgi Oteo. He was a regular starter during the season, but the team was quickly relegated to dead last.

Yeray was drafted to the main squad of the UEFA Europa League in 2016, and he made his competitive debut on September 15th as part of the UEFA Europa League group stage. Eneko Bóveda was fired three days later, despite his 2–1 home win over Valencia CF in his maiden La Liga appearance.

Yeray later became a regular starter for the Lions, appearing in 17 out of a possible 20 matches in all competitions. Due to his continuance in youth sports, he had the pleasure of playing in a different league every season from 2008 to 2016: the División de Honor Juvenil de Fétbol, fourth level with Basconia, divisions two and three with the reserves and the top tier with the senior team. However, the campaign was suspended abruptly on December 23, 2016, when the club announced that he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer and would undergo surgery within the next week; he returned to action on February 4, 2017 after only 46 days, playing the full 90 minutes in a 3–0 away loss to FC Barcelona, but five days later, he extended his contract until 2022.

On June 12, 2017, tests revealed further cancerous anomalies, resulting in Yeray having to undergo chemotherapy therapy. He was welcomed by the entire playing squad who had all shaved their heads in a show of solidarity on his return to the club's training center the following month.

In a victory over Swansea City in the Premier League International Cup (a reserve tournament), Yeray captained the Athletic under 23s on December 20. He made his return to the senior team on February 4th, just one year after his first appearance on World Cancer Day) while losing the entire of a 0–2 domestic league loss away to Girona.

Yeray has agreed to a new seven-year contract, keeping him at the San Mamés Stadium until 2026 and with a release clause set at €70 million. In an eventual 5–1 home win over Getafe CF, he scored his first competitive goal for the first team on January 25, 2021, leading home a cross from Iker Muniain for his team's second.

International career

Yeray made his Spain under-21 debut in a friendly match against Denmark on March 23. He was drafted in the squad for the UEFA European Championships this year, but he had to withdraw due to sickness before the tournament began.

Despite being outside the squad of 23 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals, Yeray was chosen by full side boss Julen Lorenzegui for a friendly against Switzerland, which was scheduled on June 3rd. In the 1–1 draw, he was an unused substitute.

Yeray made his debut against Costa Rica in November 2020 while playing for the Unofficial Basque Country team.

Barcelona are dealt a double injury blow in goalless draw against Athletic Bilbao as departing manager Xavi fumes at his side's missed chance to close the gap to Real Madrid

PETE JENSON AT THE SAN MAMES: Barcelona dropped two points in Bilbao, but more importantly, two very important players were left out of place just nine days before they face Napoli in the Champions League. Unai Simon's clearance out of his neighborhood gave him a chance to exit the area, and Joao Cancelo shot toward the empty goal. The ball was headed over the line, but Simon scrambled back to get the ball into its hands. He had taken the pain out of it, but Yeray Alvarez was still needing to get the ball off the line.
