Yasmin Ahmad Life

Yasmin Ahmad (born January 1958 – July 9, 2009) was a Malaysian film producer, writer, and scriptwriter.

She was the executive creative director of Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur.

Her television commercials and films are well-known in Malaysia for being both amusing and touching.

Her career crossed cultural boundaries, particularly her advertisements for Petronas, the national oil and gas corporation.

Her works have received multiple accolades both within Malaysia and internationally.

Her films in Malaysia were highly criticized due to their depiction of events and relationships, which have been deemed 'forbidden' by social conservatives, particularly hard-line interpretations of Islam.

Early life

On January 7, 1958, Yasmin was born in Kampung Bukit Treh, Johor. She worked as a trainee banker for two weeks and then joined IBM as a marketing representative after graduating with a degree in arts majoring in politics and psychology from Newcastle University in England. In the meantime, she moonlights as a blues singer and pianist by night. Yasmin began her career in advertising as a copywriter at Ogilvy & Mather in 1993 and then moved to Leo Burnett as joint creative director with Ali Mohammed, eventually rising to executive creative director at the firm's Kuala Lumpur branch.
