William Goldsmith Life

William Goldsmith is an American drummer best known for being with Sunny Day Real Estate and his tenure with Foo Fighters.

Currently drumming for Brawley Banks, he has toured with Mike Watt, IQU, and has recorded and played live with many other bands and artists.

Early years

Goldsmith was born in Seattle, Washington to Hugh and Skitty Goldsmith. He began playing drums as a child, after being introduced by his older brother to bands such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, and Talking Heads. Goldsmith has stated that he wanted to be John Lennon, but also a drummer, and has cited Keith Moon of The Who as his biggest influence on the instrument. During fifth grade, Goldsmith formed his first band, Screaming Hormones. In high school, Goldsmith formed a duo called the 13 with John Atkins, and later formed the hardcore punk band Reason for Hate with his friend Jeremy Enigk, whom he had previously invited to be the bassist for the 13. After Goldsmith graduated from high school, Greg Williamson invited him to the band Positive Greed. Afterwards Goldsmith worked on many ensembles, at times being a member of four bands simultaneously. He also expanded his tastes in music, becoming a fan of post-hardcore bands such as Fugazi, and of Nirvana's debut album Bleach.

William Goldsmith Career

Career

Goldsmith was invited by bassist Nate Mendel and singer-guitarist Dan Hoerner to perform with their band in 1992. Despite being involved in several initiatives, Goldsmith accepted due to their tenacity and strong focus. The band went through many names, including Empty Set, Chewbacca Kaboom, and One Day I Stopped Breathing, before settling on Sunny Day Real Estate. The trio later released Flatland Spider, a single.

As Mendel's tour with another band ended, Goldsmith invited Enigk and Hoerner to jam with him and Hoerner. Enigk was then added to the band and became their new frontman. They recorded two studio albums, both released on the well-known independent label Sub Pop, that received critical feedback and boosted the emo genre's popularity before disbanded in 1995.

Dave Grohl, a former Nirvana member, left the band a note during one of Sunny Day Real Estate's last performances. Goldsmith called him back, and Grohl invited Goldsmith and Mendel to join his new band, Foo Fighters, alongside former Germs and touring Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear, in late October 1994. They began to travel in 1995 to assist Mike Watt and Eddie Vedder's side project Hovercraft. The band's debut album, on which Grohl had played almost all instruments by himself, was released later. Although Goldsmith said he loved the smaller venues, "pretty much every after that blew," adding that as the band got bigger, "it became a world-domination thing that became very creatively stifling" and that he got sick of reproducing songs he had no involvement in writing. After the tour, Goldsmith developed carpal tunnel syndrome.

The full band formed a Seattle studio with producer Gil Norton in 1996 to record the band's second album after touring through the spring of 1996. Due to Grohl's intuitiveness, the drummer's tracks continued to be played over and over. "I've had me do 96 takes of one song, and I've had to do thirteen hours' worth of takes on another one." Everything I did wasn't right for him or someone else," the author wrote. The band took a break after the session was almost over. According to Grohl, Goldsmith's drumming had good moments, but for the most part, his results did not meet Grohl's expectations. The band reformed in Los Angeles in February 1997 and practically re-recorded the album, this time with Grohl on drums, but no one told Goldsmith about the overdub session. Goldsmith was only later told by Mendel that his contribution had been refunded. Goldsmith decided to leave after being betrayed and dissatisfied with Grohl's suggestion that he continue playing as the band's touring drummer only. Taylor Hawkins was brought back to life, and the result, The Colour and the Shape, was released on May 20, 1997.

Sub Pop had consulted Hoerner and Enigk about the unveiling of a set of Sunny Day Real Estate rarities in 1997. Rather, the band decided to reunite and debut a new studio album, 1998's How It Feels To Be Nothing More. Although Goldsmith, who had left Foo Fighters by this time, was in the reunion, Mendel stayed with Foo Fighters. On their upcoming live album, Goldsmith's last record for Sub Pop, and their 2000 studio album The Rising Tide (for Time Bomb Recordings). The band wanted to tour Europe for the first time after completing a lengthy tour of the United States; but Time Bomb couldn't afford to sponsor such a tour; the band soon ceased operations, resulting in the band's 2001 breakup.

Nate Mendel, the original Sunny Day Real Estate founder, was disbanded for the second time. An album and tour were also included.

Billy Dolan, a guitarist who had appeared on the Fire Theft album and tour, joined Goldsmith for a project called Varicocele around the same time. The band made about 30 songs and showed them to Jonathan Poneman of Sub Pop, who declined to reveal them.

Goldsmith co-founded Brawley Banks with Justin Schwartz and Jorum Young of Cobra High in 2008. They appeared at their first show in 2009.

Sunny Day Real Estate would reunite with the original lineup in June 2009. Later this year, a tour debuted. Dan Hoerner, a guitarist from early 2010, revealed that a new album is in the works.

On his Facebook page, Goldsmith said that the unfinished fifth Sunny Day Real Estate album was still "silenced, abandoned, and buried within David Grohl's murkiest depths." He would later confirm that he was referring to Studio 606, which was closed to Jeremy Enigk's absence from receiving "the moral and engineering help he deserved." "Italians are still in charge of determining who gets to bed in the morning."

Goldsmith's new band Assertion has signed to Spartan Records, which has their debut album 'Intermission' on April 9, 2021. On June 11, 2021, Rolling Stone, which dubbed the album "One of the Best Albums of 2021 So Far," praised it.
