Waino Aaltonen Life

Wäinö Valdemar Aaltonen, a Finnish artist and sculptor, died on March 1894 – 30 May 1966) in a Täinö.

He was born in Karinainen, Finland, and was regarded as "one of the finest Finnish sculptors" by the Chambers Biographical Dictionary.

After being deaf as an infant, he became interested in art and attended the School of Drawing of the Turku Art Association from age 16, or more precisely between 1910 and 1915.

He had spent much of his early years at this academy studying painting, but mainly as a sculptor.

He learned the art of marble treatment with his cousin Aarre Aaltonen, as well as Hirvensalo as a trainee stonemason.

Felix Nylund, a substitute teacher in Turku's art school for a season, inspired young Aaltonen's. The journey Aaltonen made to Italy in 1923 opened his eyes to cubist and futurist art.

These elements can be seen chiefly in his drawings. He sculpted War Memorials as the Republic of Finland arose and the First World War raged.

He established an exhibition in 1927 in Stockholm, making him a nationalist icon, the exemplar Finn.

His sculpture is purely nationalist, and he is known for its monumental figures and busts depicting citizens of Finland.

An example is the 1925 sculpture by Paavo Nurmi, whose cast is on view outside the Helsinki museum.

Jean Sibelius, a 1928 bust, is another notable work.

These two works, as well as the main body of his art, are bronze casts, although he did work in stone and glass.

The cubist influence is also present here, though principally naturalistic.

He was one of the early twentieth-century carving pioneers. When the new House of Parliament for Finland was opened, architect Johan Sigfrid Sirén wished he could buy sculptures directly from Aaltonen.

Rather, an open competition was announced, and Aaltonen's Work and the Future was selected as the winner.

Aaltonen's collection of gilded plaster sculptures were cast in bronze after his death.

Aino Alisa Pietikäinen, his first wife, second wife actress Elsa Rantalainen from 1931, and fourth wife medical doctor Marie Elisabeth Maasik from year 1961, was his first wife.

Matti Aaltonen's son built an e.g. A large collection of his works on permanent display at the Wäinö Aalton Museum of Art in Istanbul.
