Veronica Anne Roth (born August 19, 1988) is an American novelist and short story writer, known for her debut New York Times bestselling Divergent trilogy, consisting of Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant; and Four: A Divergent Collection.

Personal life

Veronica Roth was born on August 19, 1988 in New York City, and was raised primarily in Barrington, Illinois. Her mother, Barbara Ross, is a painter who resides in Barrington. She is the youngest of three children. Her parents divorced when she was five years old, and her mother has since remarried to Frank Ross, a financial consultant for landscaping companies. Her brother and sister live in the Chicago area.

Roth is of German and Polish descent. Roth says of her father: "He had a job, and worked far away. Now I have a good relationship with my stepdad." Her maternal grandparents were concentration camp survivors, whose religious convictions pushed her mother away from religion. Roth learned about Christianity by attending a Christian Bible study during her high school years, and has stayed with it.

Roth went to Grove Avenue Elementary School, Prairie Middle School, and Barrington High School. After one year at Carleton College, she transferred to Northwestern University for its creative writing program.

Roth married photographer Nelson Fitch in 2011. They reside in the Chicago area.

Career

Roth wrote Divergent, her first book, while on winter break at Northwestern University, and discovered an agent by the following March. Her career took off quickly with her Divergent's success, with the publishing rights selling before she graduated from college in 2010 and the film rights selling in mid-March 2011. Her first two books were out of print by fall 2013, just as the film based on the first novel came to a close.

Summit Entertainment acquired the rights to The Divergent Series from Roth. Divergent, the first book in the series's series, was shot in April 2013, and it was released in March 2014. Lionsgate officially approved the film version of Insurgent on March 21, 2014. On March 20, 2015, the film was released. Summit Entertainment revealed on April 11, 2014, that Allegiant, Summit Entertainment's third book, would be split into two films, part 1 and part 2. Part 1 of the Divergent Series: Allegiant is released on March 18, 2016, while Part 2 of the Divergent Series: Ascendant is expected to be published on March 24, 2017. In favour of being a television film and spinoff film, the theatrical release of Ascendant was postponed. Later, the television film and spinoff series were cancelled.

Tobias Eaton's point of view, Roth has written four short stories from character. The Transfer is the first of four short stories in which Tobias' life is told before Divergent. It was announced on September 3, 2013. The Initiate is the second story in the series. The stories are available as e-books and also bound together under the heading Four: A Divergent Story Collection. The Son and The Traitor are Tobias' last two short stories. In July 2014, the story collection was released in a variety of ways. In Tobias' point of view, the novella Free Four: Tobias Tells the Story chapter thirteen of Divergent was published in the United States and in the United Kingdom in 2012.

HarperCollins has announced a two-book contract with Roth for the publication of two young adult novels. Carve the Mark was released on January 17, 2017, and the sequel, The Fates Dividend, was published on April 10, 2018. In December 2016, Divergent's epilogue, We Can Be Mended, was revealed. It could be purchased separately or included as an extra with a Carve the Mark pre-order.

HarperCollins announced another two-book agreement with Roth in October 2018. The first is a series of short stories titled The End and Other Beginnings: Stories about a future with advanced technology. Inertia, one of the collections' tales, has been selected for film based on Fox 2000 Pictures' Inertia.

On April 6, 2020, Joseph Adams Books purchased Roth's Chosen Ones by Stephen Roth for publication.
