Early life and education
Han was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, to Korean-American parents. She graduated from Maggie L. Walker's School for Government and International Studies in 1998 and then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At The New School in 2006, she earned her Master of Fine Arts in creative writing.
Career
While in college, Han wrote her first book, Shug, about children's books. Annemarie Wilcox, a twelve-year-old girl struggling to escape junior high school's perils, was included in the Shug in 2006.
During her summer breaks, she was working on a young adult romance trilogy about a girl's coming-of-age during her summer breaks. Simon & Schuster's three books, The Summer I Turned Pretty, It's Not Summer Without You, and We'll Always Have Summer, were published from 2009 to 2011, and quickly became New York Times Best Sellers. Belly Conklin, the protagonist/narrator, falls in love with two brothers, has lived her entire life and works through a tumultuous love triangle.
Siobhan Vivian co-authored Han's second young adult trilogy, which debuted with Burn for Burn in 2012. Three young school girls are looking for revenge in their island town, and it includes both normal and romance elements. Fire with Fire, which was published in 2013, and Ashes to Ashes, which was published in 2014.
Han wrote To All the Boys I've Loved Before, a young adult romance book about Lara Jean Song Covey, a high school student whose life is turned upside down after the letters she wrote to her five past crushes were sent without her knowledge in 2014. Within weeks of its debut, the book was scheduled for a screen adaptation. P.S. The sequel, P.S. I Still Love You was published the previous year and received the Young Adult Contemporary American Award for Literature from 2015. Always and Forever, Lara Jean's third book, was published in 2017. Lana Condor in the lead role appeared in the first novel in July 2017 and was released by Netflix in August 2018. In the film, Han had a short cameo. P.S. The sequel films To All the Boys. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: In 2020 and 2021, we were both born and buried. Han's XO, Kitty, To All the Boys film series is currently in production. Han will also write, executive produce, and be a showrunner. Kitty Covey, Lara's sister, will be following her own journey to find true love in the series.
On Amazon Prime, a television series based on Han's book series The Summer I Turned Pretty' was released in June 2022. In the last episode of the series, Han had a cameo. The television adaptation was notable in part because a few things had been changed to make the story more varied. Belly, for example, appears to be white in the book, as shown by the original book cover. Belly is biracial, however; her father is white and her mother is Korean American; and her mother is Korean American. Belly's mother is Laurel Dunne in the book, but Laurel Park is the name in the television series. In addition, several explicitly gay characters appear in the television adaptation, and a main character (Jeremiah) is bisexual. The series was revived for a second season before the first season was even announced.
