Early life and education

Tyler Gregory Okonma was born in Hawthorne, California, the son of a Nigerian father with Igbo ancestry and an American mother of mixed African-American and Canadian descent. He never met his father and spent his youth in Hawthorne before moving to Ladera Heights at 17. He'll take the blanket out of a CD case and write covers for his own fictional albums, including a tracklist with song lengths, before he's able to make music. He learned to play the piano at the age of 14. He attended 12 different schools in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas during his 12 years of schooling. Okonma's eighth grade was enrolled in the drama class but was refused access because he was too hyper, and in the ninth grade, Okonma was not allowed to participate in the band class because he could not read music. He was working at FedEx for less than two weeks and at Starbucks for over two years. Okonma took his stage name from a Myspace page where he used to advertise his creative endeavors.

Personal life

Okonma has been skateboarding since 2002 and owns BMX bicycles. Okonma has identifies himself as an atheist. When on stage, Okonma has asthma and has been seen using an inhaler. He practices a straight edge for this reason.

Okonma has been questioned about his sexuality in lyrics and interviews, and he has made numerous specific references in lyrics and interviews to whether or not they had same-sex relationships or attended same-sex attractions. In a 2015 Rolling Stone interview, he described himself as "gay as fuck" and said, "My friends are so used to me being gay." They don't even care." Tyler said in a recent interview with Noisey that he already had a boyfriend by age 15. "I been kissing white boys since 2004" and the public's reaction to it, Okonma said in a 2018 interview with Fantastic Man, "It's still such a grey area with people" that is cool with me. Even though I'm loud and outspoken, I'm private, which is a strange dichotomy." Although Okonma and a closeted bisexual man's romance, "I could fuck a trillion bitsches every country I've been in/Men or women, so it doesn't matter if I'm female."

Okonma has been chastised for his use of homophobic slurs, in particular his frequent use of the word "faggot" in his songs and on Twitter. He has denied allegations of homophobia by boasting, "I'm not homophobic." "I'm not homophobic." I just think faggot hits and hurts people." Well, I have gay supporters and they don't really take it offensive, so I don't know." If it offends you, it offends you. I really don't care if you call me a nigger, but that's just me. Some people may take it the other way; I personally don't give a shit." After Ocean openly disclosed a former flame to another young man, Okonma proudly praised fellow Odd Future member Frank Ocean. On the album Flower Boy, lyrics provoked rumors that Okonma himself was gay. "Foreword," "Garden Shed," and "I Ain't Got Time" were among the tracks in question.

After screaming at fans at his South by Southwest's appearance, Okonma was arrested in Austin, Texas, for inciting a demonstration. Tyler was sentenced to one year in jail and a fine of $4000 for the traumatic incident. Perry Minton, Tyler's counsel, argued that the riot charge was overblown and propagated myths of his client, who has no previous arrests. These charges were later dismissed.

Okonma revealed on August 26, 2015, that he had been barred from visiting the United Kingdom for three to five years, prompting him to postpone a string of tour dates in favor of the Cherry Bomb album, including the Reading and Leeds Festivals. The reason for the ban was derived from lyrics dating back to 2009. Christian Clancy, his boss, was told of the ban by a letter from then-Home Secretary Theresa May. The ban was based on songs from the mixtape Bastard, but Okonma had toured the United Kingdom many times since its establishment. Okonma later said he felt he had been treated like a terrorist and implied that the prohibition was racially motivated, saying that "they did not like the fact that their children were idolizing a black man." According to the BBC, the ban was lifted in February 2019, coincidend with a scheduled London appearance to promote his fifth studio album, Igor. However, this performance was forced to be called off by police due to safety fears: the venue was allegedly overcrowded and "too rowdy."

Okonma's single "Fall" on August 31, 2018 called him a homophobic insult, and Okonma's "Fall" brought him more attention, prompting him to investigate sexuality in his music. Eminem has also chastised Okonma for his criticism of his single "Walk On Water" and Shady XV (2014). In an interview with Sway, Eminem responded, saying, "I think the word that I called him was one of the few things where I felt like this could have gone too far." I discovered that I was helping him a lot of other people. It was one of the things that I kept going back to. This isn't quite right." In an interview with The Guardian, Okonma replied, saying that "[the "Fall] line] was fine." Have you ever heard me outspoken about it? I knew what the intention was. Since people were offended for me, he felt pressured. We first heard it when we heard it. We rewound it and [shrugged]. Then kept playing."

DJ Khaled's album Father of Asahd debuted on the Billboard 200 in June 2019, and DJ Khaled's album Igor debuted on top of the charts in June 2019. "I make albums so people can play it and you can hear it." [If] driving your car, you'll hear another car playing it, go to the barbershop, and you'll see them playing it [and] turn the radio on] and see them doing it. It's called amazing music. It's called albums [where] you can actually hear the songs. You never know what kind of shit you never hear. The video was then deleted by the actor.

On August 6, 2021, Okonma discussed the DJ Khaled controversy on Hot 97, saying he enjoyed "just watching a man die inside because the weirdo is winning." DJ Khaled "had to deal with it because his whole identity is number one," he said, and if he didn't get that, he'd be able to sit with him longer in real life time than ever before. "I moved forward." On Twitter, Okonma wrote "MYSTERIOUS MUSIC!" a popular word.

HA!"
