Clinton "Trey" Johnson III, a native of the United States, is a professional basketball player who last played for the Japanese National Basketball League and played for the Hitachi SunRockers.

In the Southwestern Athletic Conference, he played college basketball with the Alcorn State Braves and the Jackson State Tigers. (SWAC).

He received the SWAC Player of the Year award during his senior year.

He has spent most of his time with the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA Development League (NBA D-League), a minor league basketball team owned and operated by the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He was called up to the NBA during his time in the D-League, and has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Toronto Raptors, and the Los Angeles Lakers.

He has also lived in Serbia, France, and Italy for several short stints.

He has represented Qatar in international competition.

Early life

Trey Johnson was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and he grew up. Clinton Jr. and his older brother, Will, played college baseball for Jackson State University. He listened to his father's footsteps and started playing baseball as a child. He then started playing basketball in his teenage years. However, he only played basketball in middle school and high school intermittently. He played basketball and baseball at Murrah High School and excelled in both basketball and baseball. He played as a pitcher in high school and was selected in the 30th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft by the Kansas City Royals. Nevertheless, he opted to attend college and participate in athletic sports before turning pro.

College career

Johnson attended Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi. For one season, he competed in both baseball and basketball. He had 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game as a basketball player. He enrolled at Alcorn State University and continued to play both sports there for a year. Nevertheless, he sustained a ligament injury on his elbow, requiring Tommy John surgery in his first appearance as a pitcher for Alcorn State. He needed one year to fully recover from the injury, and as a result, he became a full-time basketball player. When shooting 41.5% from three-point range, he averaged 11.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. However, he was dissatisfied with the basketball program and later transferred to Jackson State University for his junior season.

Johnson missed out on the 2004-05 season due to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) transfer laws. He led the Jackson State Tigers to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Semi-finals the following year, but the Tigers were defeated by the Southern Jaguars, the eventual champion. In 32 games, he averaged 23.5 points on 45.5 percent shooting, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He became the country's 10th top scorer and second in the SWAC with 23.5 points per game. During a game against Texas Southern, he scored a season-high 40 points. After his junior season, he declared himself eligible for the 2006 NBA draft but later withdrew his name and returned to Jackson State for his senior year.

Johnson led the Tigers to the SWAC Final in his senior year. Jackson State defeated Mississippi Valley State 81-71, with him scoring a game-high 33 points in the final. For the first time in seven years, Jackson State earned a spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven years. However, the Tigers were cut short when they were defeated 112–69 by the Florida Gators, the eventual champion. Nonetheless, Johnson was one of the season's top performers by scoring 27.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 35 games. After Reggie Williams, who averaged 28.1 points per game, he came in second in scoring. He was also named as the SWAC Player of the Year. During a game against UTEP, he scored a career-high 49 points. He finished his college career with 1,698 points in just two seasons with Jackson State, making him the school's eighth all-time leading scorer.

Professional career

After finishing his four-year college eligibility, Johnson was automatically eligible for the 2007 NBA draft. However, he did not get to be undrafted. In the 2007 Orlando Summer League, he appeared for the Miami Heat. He was signed by the New Orleans Hornets for their training camp and preseason roster on October 1, 2007. In 13.8 minutes per game, he played in five games, averaging 4.0 points and 1.8 assists. Johnson was waived by the Hornets before the season started and became a free agent.

Johnson began his working life with KK Hemofarm in Serbia. On January 25, 2008, he returned to the United States to join the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League (D-League). He appeared in 24 games (1 as a starter) with the Jam and averaged 11.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 27.2 minutes per game.

In July 2008, Johnson played for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2008 NBA Summer League. He played in five games, averaging 5.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 11.0 minutes per game. He was signed by the Phoenix Suns for their training camp and pre-season roster on September 26, 2008. However, he did not appear in any preseason game for the Suns and was suspended on October 13.

He returned to the Bakersfield Jam in 2008–09. Johnson was signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers on a 10-day deal on February 3, 2009, after playing 25 games while averaged 20.1 points with the Jam. He was accepted to the D-League All-Star Game roster on the same day. In the game, he scored a team-high 15 points as his team, the Red Team, defeated the Blue Team 113-103. He rejoined the Cavaliers on their second 10-day deal following the All-Star break. He appeared in four games with the Cavaliers, scoring four points on four free throw attempts. In those four games, he only played 14 minutes, but he didn't have a field goal. After his second 10-day contract came to an end, he rejoined the Jam in the D-League. He finished the season with the Jam, playing 39 games, three of whom as a starter, and averaging 20.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game in 40.1 minutes. He was also selected to the All NBA D-League Second Team.

Johnson appeared in both the Orlando Summer League and the NBA Summer League during the 2009 offseason. In the 2009 Orlando Summer League, he played for the Indiana Pacers. He appeared in all five games, scoring 9.6 points in 28.3 minutes per game. Later this year, he competed in the 2009 NBA Summer League as part of the NBA D-League Select Team. He was apparently refused an invitation to play for the San Antonio Spurs Summer League roster and decided to play with the D-League Select Team, which was coached by Scott Roth, his head coach at Bakersfield Jam. He appeared in the first two games before being forced to miss the last three games due to injury. In 24.5 minutes per game, he averaged 16.0 points on 54.5 percent shooting.

Johnson joined French company BCM Gravelines in August 2009. After playing in 17 games but scoring 8.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in 23.2 minutes per game, he left Gravelines in February 2010. He was re-signed by the Bakersfield Jam on March 2, 2010, after leaving France. In 13 games with the Jam, he averaged 21.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 7.1 assists. After the D-League season came to an end, Johnson was signed by Italian team Pallacanestro Biella for the remainder of the season. He played four games in Italy and averaged 11.5 points per game.

In July 2010, Johnson was a member of the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2010 NBA Summer League. He appeared in all five games, averaging 6.6 points in 25.6 minutes per game. Despite playing for the Clippers in the offseason, Johnson was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers' crosstown rivalry for their training camp and preseason games. He was suspended after five games and averaging 2.8 points and 1.2 assists in 8.8 minutes per game, according to his coach.

He returned to the Bakersfield Jam in 2010–11 season. Johnson, who had been playing 26 games while average 25.8 points, has signed a 10-day deal with the Toronto Raptors on January 26, 2011. He obtained his second 10-day contract after playing five games in ten days. He was selected second in February 2011 for his second time in the D-League All-Star Game. However, he did not attend because he had been called up to the NBA and wasn't on a D-League roster on the day of the All-Star Game. Johnson's second 10-day contract came to an end, and the Jam returned to the D-League. He finished the season with a 25.5 points per game average and became the league's scoring leader in the 2010-11 season. He appeared in double figures in 38 games out of 39 games played for the Jam. In a game against the Erie BayHawks on March 18, 2011, he scored a season-high 48 points. He was also selected to the All NBA D-League First Team.

Johnson signed with the Lakers for the remainder of the season on April 13, 2011. In the Lakers' last regular season game, he played 13 minutes and scored 6 points on the day. In addition, he appeared in three games in the playoffs.

Johnson joined Bancatercas Teramo in August 3, 2011. However, he was released three months later after suffering a single minute due to an injury.

He signed with the New Orleans Hornets on December 9, 2011, shortly after the 2011 NBA lockout ended. Johnson was suspended by the Hornets on January 27, 2012 after playing in 11 games and averaging 1.9 points and 1.1 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game.

He was recalled by the Bakersfield Jam on March 15, 2012.

On November 6, 2012, Johnson joined Pallacanestro Biella of Italy with his former team Pallacanestro Biella of Italy. In April 2014, he left the club for the fourth time.

He signed with Marinos de Anzotegui, Venezuela, in January 2014. He signed with Maccabi Rishon LeZion of Israel for the remainder of the season on March 3, 2014.

Johnson signed with the Sacramento Kings on September 25, 2014. However, he was later waived by the Kings on October 25, 2014.

He signed with Hitachi SunRockers of the Japanese National Basketball League on December 5, 2014, making him his first appearance in the Japanese National Basketball League.
