Millions of faithful followers in Italy and around the world, largely because of the pop song 'L'Italiano,' which tried to capture Italy's national pride in its music, history, and customs. The song never made a name for itself in the United States or the United Kingdom, but it was hugely popular in Europe and even the Soviet Union, and it laid the groundwork for Cutugno's participation in the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest, which he dominated. Cutugno was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2007, but he recovered and went on to perform well into his sixties. He resigned from public life in his seventies citing new health issues as the reason for his departure, and he died in San Raffaelle hospital on Saturday.
