Life and career
Toni Watson grew up in Mount Martha on the Mornington Peninsula to the south of Melbourne, Australia's state of Victoria. According to conflicting accounts, she was born in 1993 or 2000. "I never denied my age," the artist claims. I never told anyone about it. I can't say anything right now; everything is wrong on the internet." Claire Shaffer of Rolling Stone announced her age in May 2020 and she expected her to be 26.
"I was in the park with my family, all my cousins, and stuff in Frankston one day, and my aunty was like 'oh guys, she can actually hold a note.' I believe that's the first memory of someone pointing to me as someone with the ability to sing. I was probably 7 years old." As a secondary school student, the singer-songwriter had to learn keyboards and drum pads. While working in a fashion store at the Universal Store, she began busking in Melbourne.
Toni Watson, a singer from the United States, created a YouTube channel and posted a cappella cover version of songs in 2009. She appeared at local gigs and festivals, including the Let Go festival. Tones, the singer for a duo in 2014, "I started playing in tiny pubs and bars in Mornington, and I never stopped singing with a guitarist until I decided to branch out on my own." "I actually got discredited from my retail job, and with the money, I bought an RC300 (loop station) and just started to figure it all out." With her synthesizers and loop pedal, she has been busking "up and down the east coast" and wowed audiences with her genre-diverse design.
In September 2017, the singer-songwriter travelled to Byron Bay, New South Wales, to try busking there. She met Jackson Walkden-Brown, who became her boss about a month later, at an early appearance. Her busking success led to a renewed dedication to a music career. The artist spent 2018 in Walkden-Brown's home in Byron Bay, writing music and busking full time. By the Creek later this year, she took the Battle of the Buskers.
Tones and I signed to Bad Batch Records/Sony Music Australia in February 2019, as part of an artist's Only (owned by Walkden-Brown, ex-Aerials) and Lemon Tree Music (co-owned by Regan Lethbridge and David Morgan, both ex-Bonjah). In the month, she released "Johnny Run Away," her debut single, to Triple J's website, Unearthed, which publishes unsigned artists' music. Konstantin Kersting, an Australian musician, was involved in the project. "It] became a viral sensation, racking up streams," AllMusic's Fred Thomas said.
"Johnny Run Away" was added to full rotation on Triple J this week, receiving high praise from staff: Richard Kingsmill (four-and-a-half), Tommy Faith (five actors), and Declan Byrne (four-and-a-half actors). "A melodic slice of Nordic-inspired electro-pop that tells a very important tale," Blank Gold Coast's Natalie O'Driscoll described the track: "a melodic slice of Nordic-inspired electro-pop that tells a very important tale." "Johnny Run Away" was officially announced by Tones and I two weeks ago. It reached number 12 on the ARIA Singles Chart and received triple platinum status for deliveries of over 210,000 units.
"Dance Monkey" by Tones and I on May 10, 2019. "Written alone in a dim closet in not more than 30 minutes," she recalled. "It's pop writ large," Craig Mathieson of The Age said, "It's pop writ large, but also affecting." It ranked No. 1 on the official music charts of over 30 countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Japan, Malaysia, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom.
Liam Kelly and Nick Kozakis produced "Dance Monkey"'s music video. In November of that year, she tied for the most weeks atop the ARIA Singles Chart (which began in mid-1989) by an artist. This was previously hosted by Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" (15 weeks in 2017). "Dance Monkey" had spent 24 weeks at number one by mid-January 2020. This is in comparison to Bing Crosby's number one hit "White Christmas," which was equivalent to 22 weeks) at the top in 1943. It was the first Australian song to debut on Spotify's global top 200 streaming charts. It tied for the most days on the same chart on February 8, 2020, equaling Post Malone's "Rockstar" for the most days at number one. "Dance Monkey" returned to the top of the Spotify charts on February 18, 2020, having spent 120 days at number one.
Tones competed in the Grass competition in May 2019 as the Triple J Unearthed Splendour, as well as opening Splendour in the Grass competition, where she set a record for the largest audience in an opening set. "Never Seen the Rain" was her third single and she appeared in "The Kids Are Coming" on August 30, 2019. At the AFL Grand Final in September 2019, Tones and I performed "Dance Monkey" and "The Kids Are Coming" for the first time. On the Triple J Hottest 100, 2019, three of the EP's tracks were listed on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2019: "Dance Monkey" (No. 1). (No. 4) "Never Seen the Rain" (No. 4). (No. 15) and "Johnny Run Away" (No. (26).
She began her Kids Are Coming Worldwide Tour in Australia and seven dates in North America on February 1, 2020. Rachel Goodman of Riff Magazine caught her performance in San Francisco in mid-January. "She] brought a palpable energy to the stage, and concertgoers applauded..." [and] recounted how she managed to connect with audiences and quickly capture people's interest."
The tour ran from 52 dates to July. However, tour dates were postponed from April 2021 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic local tour dates. "I must cut short the remainder of my first tour over here," the artist said. "I must not want to force anyone to make a decision between me and their health."
Quarantune, part of a COVID-19 self-isolation musical competition, Triple J premiered "We Can't Wait to Go Back to a Festival When This Is Over" on May 7, 2020. "Dance Monkey" reached 1 billion views on YouTube on May 20. It was named in May 2020 and was awarded the Grand Prize of the 2019 International Songwriting Competition. Poppy Reid, the artist's managing editor, published an interview on Rolling Stone (Australia) earlier this month. Reid had seen her at the Laneway Festival in February, "there's a manic energy and awe at any moment"—the possibility of a global career without a major brand and without a stack of co-writers."
During August 2020, the singer and her team ran That One Song, a social media competition that featured a different developing artist each day, "to post original content" on her website. The finalists were chosen by the public on September 2nd, from a group of 20 artists who had previously showncased. "They're Playing My Song" won the competition, according to Monatomic's entry. On 5 and 6 September 2020, Tones and I co-headlined a virtual concert with Gary Clark Jr. The performances were funded for the Equal Justice Initiative and were streamed live on various media platforms.
"I've taken the time to just make sure it's what I want," the artist revealed in September that her debut album is expected in 2 or three months. I want to add more songs to the mix. I'm sure I'm proud of it because this is my first album ever. "Fly Away," the singer's new album, debuted in mid-November, and the Newcastle Civic Theatre's first live performance took place on November 24. The single enjoyed moderate global success, peaking at 4 in Australia, 10 in Ireland, 11 in the United Kingdom, and Denmark, and top 40 in many European nations.
Helen Reddy (1941–2020) received three more nominations and joined an all-female ensemble in a tribute to her mother, Helen Reddy (1941–2020). She revived her Australian national tour in Melbourne in April 2021, and the Cairns and Brisbane visited east coast capitals as well as Cairns into May. On May 14, she released her single "Won't Sleep," which was released on May 14th.
On July 16, 2021, Tones and I released her debut album Welcome to the Madhouse on Bad Batch/Sony Music Australia. (June 2021) it includes singles, "Fly Away," "Won't Sleep," and "Cloudy Day." Shaad D'Souza of Guardian Australia rated the album at two out of five stars and referred to it as "unadventurous and occasionally exhausting." "The overwhelming majority of the record deals with Watson's mental health issues as well as the cruelty of her haters, both online and in real life." However, there's nothing to connect with here beyond the logline. "Behind her witty, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and soaring, sometimes soaring vocals, a self-confessed stranger struggling to express herself by music, Martin Boulton of The Sydney Morning Herald proclaimed, "Behind her soaring, soaring, vocal, and captivating vocals, she comes as the true outsider attempting to introduce herself through music." This is no simple challenge. The album debuted on the ARIA Albums Chart and spent four weeks within the top 50.
"I've already started this next album that's coming out in August," Tones and I told Triple J's Sose Fuamoli. "Eyes Don't Lie" was the album's lead single, and it was released in March. Amyl and the Sniffers' "Guided by Angels" was a nominee for Song of the Year in May, 2022. Tones' "heavenly interpretation" stunned Al Newstead of Triple J; she was joined by a chorus and gave a "full vocal performance."
"Chant" was her first collaboration with Macklemore in July, and "Charlie" followed her next month. The former is ode to her dog breeds. Range's Daniel Hartmann said that her forthcoming album is expected to be "cheerful and groovy music made for performing live."
