Tongai Moyo (12 March 1968 – October 15, 2011) was a contemporary Zimbabwean musician who was often described as Dhewa.
Dhewa was born and raised in Kwekwe and rose to fame in the late 1990s as a solo artist and with the band Utakataka Express.
"Samanyemba," "Naye," and "Muchina Muhombe" were among his hit singles over the course of 20 years; he released 14 albums in a span of more than 20 years; Toita Basa, his 14th and final album, was released on November 25, 2010 by record label Gramma Records.
The album was released when he was being diagnosed with cancer, which had been diagnosed in 2008.
The song "Ndinobvuma" was particularly dedicated to his fight against the disease.
Personal life
He was married to Miniehle Mukweli and had six children, including Natasha, Nicole, Obert (Tongai Jnr), Tanaka and Nyasha, and Peter Moyo. In his lifetime, Tongai Moyo was known to have seven wives. Maud Chirwa (Peter's mother), mother to Nyasha Moyo (whose name we could not recall), the late Barbara Mucheni and his surviving wife Miniehle Mukweli are among his known formal wives. There isn't much information about his first wife Maud, as she only appeared in public forums after Dhewa died. She claims to fame by giving birth to the heir-apparent to the throne, Peter Igwe. Maud and Dhewa divorced before Peter could even say a single word, according to sources. His second wife was born to Nyasha Brenda, whose real name we couldn't guess since she is said to be staying in South Africa. Barbara Muchengeti, the third wife, died in 2010 after she committed suicide under unethical circumstances because she did not leave a suicide note. And, of course, Dhewa died unaware of why his wife had died. Barbara Muchengeti died at Kwekwe General Hospital, where she had been admitted after taking poison after a domestic incident. The Utakataka Express front man died a day after his wife's death. The artiste suspects that things went wrong when he begged his younger sister to stay with them for about four months leading up to his wife's death. As we continued to look for ways to enhance our lives, Tongai Moyo later recalled, "We had a family chat with Barbara, my second wife (Miniehle Mukweli) and my sister. "I'm sick, and I thought it was appropriate to bring the two women under one roof." Barbara kvuma zvakange asingade (Baby later announced she pregnant and expecting her second child after her late husband's death, but she had no idea it would end like this (she died by suicide). Miniehle told a local tabloid that she had taken in Mutosvori, and that "very soon wedding bells will be ringing because he paid everything as per our tradition." Tongai Moyo had been declared homeless at some point in his career. Tongai "Dhewa" Moyo, a Kwekwe-based sungura musician, had nothing to show for it, despite his fame and charisma. And no house has been built. The Utakataka Express frontman lived in Msa, Kwekwe, for more than a decade in the music industry and with about 14 albums under his belt. Tongai Moyo took a public HIV test to rule out rumors that he was actually fighting the disease. The singer was negative for the HIV virus.
Music career
In 1988, the gifted singer began his career in his home-town, Kwakwe. The 'Muchinamuhombe' singer performed in many bands before joining Shirichena Jazz Band as a session guitarist, assisting the band in releasing two albums and a single. The most popular was "Ndoita Zvangu Ndega," which was released in 1991. By then, Moyo was practically unknown. After which he released his first solo album, 'Vimbo,' in 1996, he went on to form his own band, the Utakataka Express. The album earned Moyo a reputation in the music business, which was dominated by Nicholas Zakaria and Alick Macheso, who performed the same style. Since then, he never looked back and went on to debut 14 albums to his credit. Dhewa's chart topper "Nemumvura Mese" with his album "Naye" earned him two Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA). Moyo's 14th album 'Toita Basa' was released at the time of his death.
