Thomas Harold Netherton Jr. (January 11, 1947 – January 7, 2018), was an American singer.
He was known for his time on The Lawrence Welk Exhibition.
Early life
Netherton was born in Munich, Germany, when his father, a United States Army officer, was stationed there. Netherton and his family were relocating frequently as a result of his father's Army service work. In 1961, the Nethertons permanently settled in Bloomington, Minnesota.
Netherton, a second Lieutenant who served in Vietnam, was stationed in Panama after enlisting in the Army during the Vietnam War. He had also decided to pursue a singing career and performed with Army and Air Force music ensembles. Following a sermon he heard at a Baptist church in Panama, Netherton spent a year at the Bethany Fellowship Missionary Training Center in Bloomington after being released from the Army. Faced with the choice between missionary service and a career in entertainment, Netherton decided to follow the same path taken by his idol, Pat Boone, and became a Christian singer.
Personal life
Netherton had been living in Goshen, Indiana, where he worked for holiday clubs and entertaining senior citizens at Greencroft Senior Center in late 2007. Netherton never married. Brad Netherton, Netherton's younger brother, died of pneumonia and the flu on January 7, 2018, age 70. On the Nashville Funeral and Cremation web site, an obituary was posted.
Career
In 1973, Netherton appeared on the Lawrence Welk show cast. His inclusion in Welk's group of entertainers came as a result of Harold and Sheila Schafer's recommendation to Welk, the owners of a North Dakota theater where Netherton had been performing. Netherton appeared on Lawrence Welk's show from 1973 to 1982. He appeared on "The Dating Game" in 1975, selecting from three bachelorettes. In 1979, he wrote "In the Morning of My Life" an autobiography.
Netherton also recorded Christian and secular music albums while on the program and after, in addition to his long-time affiliation to the Welk program. His work as a tour guide and performer around the country, as well as appearing in stage musical productions of Oklahoma, was part of Lawrence Welk's career. Carousel and Lavesquel are among the many attractions on display. He appeared on television commercials for Rose Milk skin care cream and Nabisco's Triscuit crackers during the 1970s and 1980s. Netherton appeared on television shows such as Pat Robertson's The 700 Club, Robert Schuller's The Hour of Power, and will appear at Billy Graham's religious crusades.
