Tom Kühnhackl (born 21 January 1992) is a German professional ice hockey player who currently plays for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL).

He has also competed for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Augsburger Panther of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), Germany's top-tier hockey league. He was ranked eighth among European skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau, and the Pittsburgh Penguins selected him 110th overall.

Kühnhackl was selected by the Windsor Spitfires 24th overall in the 2009 CHL Import Draft and moved to North America for the 2010–2011 season.

Kühnhackl made his NHL debut with the Penguins in 2016.

Personal life

Kühnhackl was born and raised in Landshut, Bavaria, and first started playing hockey at the age of two. Erich, his father, competed in the best German leagues from 1968 to 1989, and participated in five Winter Olympics for West Germany. In 2000, he was named Germany's best ice hockey player of the twentieth century. Kühnhackl, a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins, was drafted into the team that drafted him. He started playing hockey at age five following in his family's footsteps—his brother, sister, and father all played hockey in Germany.

Playing career

Kühnhackl played youth hockey for the Landshut Cannibals program for three seasons, starting in 2007 alongside Tobias Rieder. He made his professional debut during the 2008–09 season, playing 42 games with Landshut's commercial team in the second Bundesliga, the second-highest level in Germany. He debuted in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) during the 2009-2010 season, playing four games with the Augsburger Panthers.

In the 2009 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft (OHL)'s Windsor Spitfires' The Kühnhackl was selected 24th overall by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)'s Windsor Spitfires. He intended to join the team for the 2009–10 season, but a string of injuries kept him in Germany. In May 2010, he signed a deal with the Spitfires to join the team for the 2010–11 season.

Kühnhackl, the ninth-best European skater of the 2010 draft class by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau, was ranked 110th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. As he listed the Penguins as his favorite team, Kühnhackl was eager to be drafted by Pittsburgh.

On March 22, 2011, he signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Penguins worth $1.83 million.

In 63 games with Windsor, Kühnhackl finished the 2010-11 season with 39 goals and 29 assists for 68 points. He played four games with the Spitfires to begin the 2011-2012 season, with one goal and three assists, until he was traded (along with Windsor's second round pick in the 2013 CHL Import Draft) on November 2nd, 2011 to the Niagara IceDogs in exchange for Phillip Di Giuseppe, Jaroslav Pavelka, Niagara's second-round pick in the 2013 CHL Import Draft).

Kühnhackl delivered an elbow to Kitchener Rangers defenceman Ryan Murphy on November 4, 2011, and was fined five minutes for both alleged and game misconduct. Kühnhackl made contact with the opponent's head and assaulted a young, unsuspecting participant, according to a OHL website video. In making its decision, the OHL considered the speed and distance traveled, as well as the fact that Murphy was injured on the play. Kühnhackl will be suspended for 20 games as a result of the attack, according to OHL president David Branch on November 8, 2011.

Kühnhackl made his professional debut in the 2012-13 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, but was sidelined by injury after just 11 games. Kühnhackl dislocated his shoulder on December 2, 2012, requiring season-ending surgery.

Kühnhackl scored his first NHL goal, a shorthanded breakaway goal, during a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 20th. Kühnhackl and fellow breakout players Scott Wilson and Bryan Rust joined Pittsburgh on March 14 after scoring 6 points in his first 28 games, including a two-assist game against the New York Rangers the day before.

Kühnhackl had an amazing run with the Penguins in the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs, defeating the New York Rangers (4–1), Washington Capitals (4–2), San Jose Sharks (4–2), clinch the Stanley Cup for the second time. He was the third German-born NHL player (following Uwe Krupp and Dennis Seidenberg) to win the Cup. Kühnhackl was the first German-born NHL player to win the Stanley Cup twice with the Penguins in 2017.

Kühnhackl was unable to reach an agreement on a new deal as a restricted free agent after the 2017-18 season, his sixth season with the Penguins' organization. He was not given a qualifying bid and was sent to investigate the free agent market on June 25, 2018. He began as a free agent on July 2nd and agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Islanders.

Kühnhackl joined the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' training camp on January 22nd and was then signed to a one-year deal.

Following his eleventh season in North America, Kühnhackl returned to Europe as a free agent, signing with Skellefte AIK of the Swedish Hockey League on August 20, 2021.
