Career

He worked in regional theatre and then became a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines, headquartered in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1973, he moved to New York.

Moore used "Berenger" as his professional name after being required to change his surname for the Actors' Equity Association as his official name.

Berenger appeared on soap operas and appeared in One Life to Live as lawyer Tim Siegel. Rush It (1976), an independent film, was John Kerry's lead in his debut in Rush It (1976). In 1976, he was small actor in the lead role (played by Diane Keaton) in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, which was based on the assassination of schoolteacher Roseann Quinn. He appeared in In Praise of Older Women for Avco-Embassy Pictures in 1978. He appeared in Butch and Sundance: The Early Days in 1979, a role he resemblance to Paul Newman, who played the character in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969).

Berenger appeared in several major films in the 1980s, including The Big Chill (1983), Eddie and the Cruisers (1983), Rustlers' Rhapsody (1985), Someone to Watch (1989), and Major League (1989). Thomas Beckett, the main character in the mid-1990s film Sniper (which will later be followed by six sequels starring Berenger in the starring role for four), is a role for which he has become well-known. Born on the Fourth of July (1989), Shattered (1991), and Chasers (1994). Berenger said it was too difficult to choose his favorite film out of those in which he had starred, but that the one he loved the most was 1993's Gettysburg, where he portrayed General James Longstreet.

In 1988, he established the Tom Berenger Acting Scholarship Fund to honor theatre students for outstanding results.

Berenger has maintained his active film and television career in recent years, but often at a supporting level. Berenger appeared on the box art and promotional material for Novalogic's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, as his appearances in Sniper 2 and Sniper 3 were very similar to what was expected for the game's artwork. In "The Road Virus Heads North," he appeared in Stephen King's Nightmares & Dreamscapes as a heralded author who discovers that the warped painting he recently purchased is still alive with illustrations of imminent doom for him. In the dramatic thriller Breaking Point, which had a limited release beginning in December 2009, Berenger stars Armand Assante and Busta Rhymes.
